Academic & Performance Areas
Music Theory Area
Degree Programs
The music theory area at Michigan State University College of Music
consists of six faculty members with diverse interests and areas of specialization,
including music cognition, music theory pedagogy,
twentieth-century analytical techniques, computer assisted music analysis,
nineteenth-century form and style, jazz theory, composition, and arranging.
Several faculty members hold a Ph.D. in music theory from prestigious
universities, including the Eastman College of Music, Harvard, the University
of Pennsylvania, and Yale University, and several members are active as
composers and performers.
The area offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music theory,
and provides instruction for all of the undergraduates and most of
the graduate students majoring in music at MSU. Members of the music theory
faculty actively pursue various research interests, many of which relate
to pedagogy, and they take pride in their dedication to teaching. Recognizing
the growing need for advanced training in music theory pedagogy, the area
is currently revising its degree programs in order to offer new graduate
study options for performers who want to develop their knowledge of music
theory and their preparedness to teach music theory at the college level.
Graduate assistants play a vital role as teachers in the undergraduate theory curriculum,
leading recitation sections, teaching ear training and theory for non-majors,
and helping faculty members run core theory courses. Both faculty and
graduate assistant theory instructors at MSU have a wide array of up-to-date
technology resources available to them to assist both their research and
teaching activities.
