Paul Mistele, of Ventura, California, graduated from MSU in 1970 with a degree in business education, but his first love was music, thanks to his mother, Ruth. He also played the trombone in the MSU Spartan Marching Band for several years.
Paul and Margaret Mistele created the $25,000 Ruth Mistele Scholarship in Trombone Studies in honor of Paul’s mother, Ruth, in 2003. As a way to give back to the MSU and the College of Music, Paul has since endowed the scholarship at $200,000.
The scholarship was created in memory of Paul’s mother, Ruth, who instilled in Paul the love of music. The endowment was created not only as a way to honor Ruth in perpetuity, but as a way to give back to the university.
“Having started out at MSU as a trombone performance major in the College of Music, it really had an impact on me, and confirmed that music had to be a part of my life,” said Paul. “It also rounded out my music appreciation. The endowment was a way to make my dollars work for the university that enriched my life so much.”
Mark Potter, an undergraduate in Trombone Performance, was the first recipient of this scholarship in 2003.
