Professor of Music from the University of North Texas, Torgbui Midawo Gideon Foli Alorwoyie leads the Afrikania Cultural Troupe showcasing traditional drumming and dance from Ghana, West Africa.

The group’s repertoire consists of traditional and neotraditional dances choreographed for the stage but traditionally existing in ritual, social, religious, and recreational contexts, primarily from (but not limited to) the Ewe, Dagbamba, Asante, and Ga-Adangme ethnic groups of Ghana.
About Gideon Alorwoyie
Alorwoyie began his official career in education in 1964 at Ghana’s Institute of Art and Culture before he served as the chief master drummer of the Ghana National Dance Ensemble from 1967 to 1976 at the University of Ghana’s Department of African Studies. During his tenure, he taught the likes of composer Steve Reich and professors David Locke and John Chernoff, who credit Alorwoyie in their compositions and scholarly publications.
About Afrikania Cultural Troupe
The Afrikania Cultural Troupe is fully dedicated to the preservation of ritual music and dance of the ancestral gods of various, diverse African cultures, particularly of the Ewe-Anlo speaking people of Ghana (West Africa). The group has been drawn from different ethnic backgrounds, each contributing unique skills in African dance, song, and ritual performance. The group was founded in August 1999 by Professor Torgbui Midawo Gideon Foli Alorwoyie, who presides as both artistic director and chief master drummer.
