New School of Music Faculty

 

The MSU School of Music is pleased to announce the appointments of the following new faculty members:

Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson, associate professor of jazz studies

A longtime member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and saxophone player for Wynton Marsalis’ band, Anderson has recorded and released three solo albums and has been a frequent participant in Jazz at Lincoln Center educational events. He served on the faculty of the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies.

Michael Bowman, visiting assistant professor of trumpet

A former faculty member at Calvin College, Hope College, and Grand Valley State University, Bowman received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music performance from the University of Michigan. He has been principal trumpet of the Grand Rapids Symphony since 1974.

Carol Hess, professor of musicology

Prior to this appointment, Hess was associate professor of music at Bowling Green State University. She is the author of Manuel de Falla and Modernism in Spain,

1898-1936, published by University of Chicago Press and Sacred Passions: The Life and Music of Manuel de Falla, published by Oxford University Press. Hess received her Ph.D. in musicology from the University of California, Davis.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Derek Polischuk, assistant professor of piano and piano pedagogy

A native of San Diego, Polischuk was assistant lecturer in keyboard studies at the University of Southern California, where he also received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor of musical arts degrees. He is the recipient of prizes in the Carmel International Piano Competition and the California International Young Artists Competition.

 

Kevin Sedatole, director of bands and professor of music

Before coming to MSU, Sedatole served as director of bands and associate professor of conducting at Baylor University for four years where he conducted the Wind Ensemble. He has also served as associate director of bands at the University of Texas and director of the Longhorn Band. Sedatole was the associate director of bands at the University of Michigan and Stephen F. Austin State University.
