Brian Alegant, associate professor of music theory at Oberlin Conservatory
of Music, presented an illustrated lecture on the compositional style of composer
Luigi Dallapiccola. Patricia Green, assistant professor of voice at MSU,
sang two of these works, accompanied by Dr. Alegant on piano.
Prominent Australian Clarinetist Roslyn Dunlop, clarinet teacher at
Sydney Conservatorium, presented a master class and recital. Her program featured
20th century clarinet contemporary music on the B-flat clarinet and the bass
clarinet, with enhanced electronics. Dunlop is an MSU alumna.
Eric Ewazen, faculty member of Juilliard School; lecturer for the New
York Philharmonic's Musical Encounters Series; and composer-in-residence with St.
Luke's Chamber Ensemble, NYC, presented a composition master class. The
award-winning Los Folkloristas, a seven-member Latin American ensemble, performed
a concert featuring a traditional blend of Mexican and Latin American music in
celebration of its 35th anniversary. Students from local schools were bused in to
attend the concert. The members of Los Folkloristas then visited various local
middle schools to conduct workshops. The group formed in 1966 "to preserve and
record the traditional music of Mexico and Latin American."
Donald Freund, professor of composition and chair of Indiana University's
Composition Department, presented a composition masterclass and recital. MSU
Professor of Saxophone Joseph Lulloff commissioned Freund to compose a
piece entitled Louder than Words, which Lulloff premiered along with MSU College of Music Director James Forger, saxophone; and guest artist Jun
Okada, piano.
Michel Garcin-Marrou, co-principal horn of the Paris (France) Orchestra,
presented a master class and recital.
Katherine Kemler, professor of flute at Louisiana State University and
flutist with the Timm Wind Quintet, presented a master class and recital.
Walfrid Kujala, former piccolo with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
presented flute master classes, recitals, clinics and exhibits with Richard
Sherman, associate professor of flute at MSU, at his first annual
Mid-Michigan Flute Festival.
So-Jin Lee, assistant professor of piano at Kyungnam University in Korea,
presented a master class and recital. She is an alumna of the MSU College of Music.
David Liptak, professor of composition at the Eastman College of Music,
presented a composition master class. James Forger and the MSU String
Orchestra, Dai Uk Lee conducting, performed his American premiere of
Serenade For Saxophone and Strings at the "Modern Music: Old and New" concert.
Liptak is a former member of the MSU composition and theory faculty.
Renowned trumpeter Tim Morrison performed at the Fall 2001 Spartan
Spectacular. His work can be heard in many feature films including Born on the
4th of July, JFK, Apollo 13, Nixon, Amistad and Saving Private Ryan. Morrison has
played principal trumpet with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony, the
Boston Classical Orchestra, the Albany Symphony, the Pacific Symphony and many
others.
John Rommel, professor of trumpet at Indiana University, presented a
master class.
Jazz legend Arturo Sandoval presented a jazz, trumpet and brass master
class and concert. Sandoval is a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy
Gillespie, and received four Grammy awards among his 12 Grammy nominations. He
has performed with Herbie Hancock, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Patti LeBelle,
and Tony Bennett.
Frank Ticheli, professor of composition at the University of Southern
California, was guest composer and conductor of the MSU Concert Band and Wind
Symphony.
Olly Wilson, composer-in-residence with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra,
and professor of composition at the University of California, Berkeley, presented
a master class and lecture.
