Takeshi Abo, a doctoral candidate in Viola Performance, was appointed concertmaster of the Battle Creek Symphony.

Joseph Abramo, a master's student in Music Theory, presented a featured solo performance at the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Regional Convention at the University of Dayton.

Teresa Akers, an undergraduate in Music Therapy, received the Michigan Music Therapists Memorial Internship Scholarship.

Marco Albionetti, a doctoral candidate in Saxophone Performance, taught in a sabbatical leave position at Bowling Green State University. He is the founder and director of The Faenza Estate Musica, a two-week workshop devoted to pedagogical saxophone skills. He presented several recitals and master classes throughout the nation as a member of the Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet. He gave a featured solo performance at the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Saxophone Convention at the University of Dayton.

Jason Altieri, a doctoral candidate in Orchestral Conducting, guest conducted the MSU 2002 Honors Concert, and the MSU Opera Theater's Spring 2002 production of Orpheus in the Underworld.

Laura Avers, an undergraduate in Music Therapy, received the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs Music Therapy Scholarship.

Richard Begel, a doctoral candidate in Trombone Performance, was appointed second trombone with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra.

Gerald Blanchard, a doctoral candidate in Voice Performance, performed as baritone soloist in Faure's Requiem Mass; sang the role of King Balthazar in Amahl and the Night Visitors; was featured in MSU's MLK jazz concert Spirituals, Prayer and Protest; and was featured in a concert celebrating the music of African American composers/arrangers presented by the Earl Nelson Singer's and the CMS Children's Choir. He performed as baritone soloist with the Lenawee Community Chorus and members of the Adrian Symphony in a production of Handel's Messiah; and in Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass with the University of Michigan-Flint Choirs and members of the Flint Symphony Orchestra at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He directs the University of Michigan-Flint Opera Theatre Ensemble, and teaches studio voice there. He appears on With a Song in My Heart, a solo CD of art songs by African American composers, and the world premiere of the song cycle With a Song in My Heart by American composer Dominic Dousa. He served as voice instructor at the MSU Community Music School, and director of the musical theatre workshop for the MST@MSU program for gifted and talented students. John Bragle, an undergraduate in Music Education, performed as tenor soloist with the Grand Blanc and Flushing High School Choirs, with members of the Flint Symphony.

Russell Branch, a master's student in Music Performance, was appointed a position with the Dodsworth Saxhorn Band, Ann Arbor (MI).

Aaron Brunelle, an undergraduate in Tuba Performance, performed with the Midland Symphony Orchestra.

Suzanne Burton, a doctoral candidate in Music Education, was appointed assistant professor of music at the University of Delaware. She presented a session at the Midwestern Conference, and had an article entitled “An Exploration of Preschool Children's Spontaneous Songs and Chants” published in the refereed journal, Visions of Research in Music Education.

Anthony Bush, an undergraduate in Instrumental Music Education (Tuba), performed with the West Shore Symphony and the Birmingham Symphony (MI).

Maureen Carlson, a doctoral candidate in Voice Performance, served as adjunct voice faculty at the University of Michigan in Flint, and as an instructor for the MSU Community Music School.

Wei Tsun Chang, a doctoral candidate in Violin Performance, is professor of violin at Alma College, and a one-year replacement faculty member at Central Michigan University.

Mi Jung Choe, a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance, participated in the Shandelee Festival, N.Y.

Hyun-Joo Choi, a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance, participated in the Banff Summer Festival, Canada.

Jai Won Choi, a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance, participated in the Aria Summer Festival, Canada.

Janell Christie, a doctoral candidate in Saxophone Performance, participated in a Featured Quartet Performance at the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Saxophone Convention at the University of Dayton.

Kevin Darrow, a master's student in Oboe Performance, was appointed the top oboe position in the U.S. Air Force Band, Washington, D.C.

Lateena Dinkins, an undergraduate in Voice Performance, spoke and sang a role in the public reading of “The Will” by Sandra Seaton.

Timothy Dixon, a master's student in Orchestral Conducting, was appointed assistant professor and conductor at Messiah College (PA).

Ken Drobnak, a doctoral candidate in Tuba Performance, was appointed part-time lecturer at Olivet College.

Andrea Dykstra, a doctoral candidate in Musicology, received a Graduate Merit Fellowship for Fall 2002. Rosalia Emanuele, a master's student in Piano Pedagogy, presented a poster upon invitation at the 2001 Music Teachers' National Association Convention.

Oleg Galanin, a doctoral candidate in Composition, was commissioned by Rodney Whitaker, director of jazz studies at MSU, to compose and arrange two pieces for the MSU Octet I jazz ensemble; one piece, Headstand, is already complete. He was awarded a scholarship and teaching assistantship in 2001. His electronic works have been performed at Soundscapes 2002 in Australia, and three new works premiered during the 2001-02 academic year.

Claudio Gonzalez, a doctoral candidate in Orchestral Conducting, continues his conducting duties with the Youth Orchestras in Caracas, Venezuela, and teaches violin in the Friedman School in Caracas.

Chris Grymes, a doctoral candidate in Clarinet Performance, was appointed assistant professor of clarinet at Eastern Carolina University.

Shannon Gunn, a master's student in Music Education, was appointed principal trombone with the Pontiac/Oakland Symphony.

Minako Hata, an undergraduate in Music Therapy, received the Michigan Music Therapists Memorial Internship Scholarship and the Birmingham Musicale Music Therapy Scholarship.

Laura Hawbaker, a master's student in Saxophone Performance, attended the Faenza Music Institute in Italy for a Saxophone Quartet Workshop. She also performed as a member of a quartet at the NASA Regional Saxophone Convention at the University of Dayton.

Emily Hay, a doctoral candidate in Oboe Performance, was one of three chosen nationally to attend the Chautauqua Festival.

Anne Henderson, undergraduate in Instrumental Music Education, attended the Faenza Music Institute in Italy for a Saxophone Quartet Workshop.

Chris Hill, an undergraduate in Double Bass Performance, was appointed music director of the Mason Junior Orchestra (MI); and a double bass position with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. As musical director of the Lansing Civic Players, he conducted two performances of the world premiere of the musical Folles, and six performances of Steven Sondheim's musical Company. In addition, he was accepted to the Conductors Retreat in Medomak, Maine.

John Hipol, an undergraduate in Instrumental Music Education, was appointed fourth horn with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra.

Chi-Chung Ho, a doctoral candidate in Orchestral Conducting, is the assistant conductor of the MSU Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor of the MSU Campus Orchestra. He was music director and conductor of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera Iolanthe at the University of Michigan; and guest conducted the Filharmonic Sudecka in Poland. He was appointed assistant conductor of the Symphony Orchestra at the Hong Kong Music Camp. He attended the Gustav Meier's International Conducting Workshop in Czech Republic, and the conducting workshop by the American Symphony Orchestra League. He received a scholarship for The Concordia Orchestra Conductor's Workshop. During the past year, he conducted and performed more than 20 orchestral and opera performances in the United States and Europe.

Jonathan Holden, a doctoral candidate in Clarinet Performance, was appointed a clarinet position with the Jackson, West Shore, and Lansing Symphonies.

Brandy Hudelson, an undergraduate in Flute Performance, was appointed second flute with the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra.

Marina Ionescu, a master's student in Composition, performed her compositions in Shared Inheritances: Romanians in Troy, as part of Detroit's 300th Anniversary; a recital of her own compositions in Targoviste, Romania; at the chartering ceremony for the Targoviste Rotary Club with musicians from Romania; and helped organize and performed in the National Day of Romania in Troy, Mich. She studied electronic music at Centre de Creation Musicale Iannis Xennakis (CCMix) in Paris, France.

Ji-Eun Kang, a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance, performed at the Shandelee Music Festival (NY); in chamber music concerts with established musicians; and in Sorrento's prestigious concert series Concerti al Cocumella in Italy. She was featured in the October issue of the Juilliard School Journal for her outstanding and active performances in Italy. Her performance at Sunset Pavilion Hall was featured on WJFF 90.5 in Catskill Mountains (NY).

Jaehee Kim, a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance, received the Ben Salon Scholarship.

John Quentin Lee Kim, a master's student in Piano Performance, was selected to play at the Van Cliburn Competition screening recital in Chicago.

Yuko Kishimoto, a master's student in Piano Pedagogy, was appointed an instructor position at Schoolcraft College (MI).

Eric Lau, a doctoral candidate in Saxophone Performance, was appointed visiting instructor of saxophone at Crane School of Music (NY), where he performed in a faculty saxophone recital. He was a featured guest soloist at the consortium copremiere performance of Dream Dancer by Michael Colgrass with the Hope College Wind Ensemble. As part of the Great Lakes Saxophone Quartet, Lau performed Charles Ruggiero's Three Blues for Saxophone Quartet on a CD entitled “Tribute to Adolphe Sax Series, Vol. 5,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album.

Ji-Young Lee, a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance, won the Kankakee Valley Symphony Concerto Competition; won fourth prize at the Beethoven Piano Sonata competition; and received the Karlene Salon and Ben Salon scholarship.

Erik Ludwig, a master's student in Trombone Performance, was appointed adjunct professor of trombone at Alma College.

Shudong Luo, a doctoral candidate in Voice Performance, studied at the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program in Chianti, Italy. She sang the lead role in the opera Thomas and Sally at the Southfield Arts Center (MI).

Melanie Manlusoc, undergraduate in Instrumental Music Education, attended the Faenza Music Institute in Italy for a Saxophone Quartet Workshop. She also performed in a quartet performance at the NASA Regional Saxophone Convention at the University of Dayton.

John Martinich, an undergraduate in Percussion Performance, was appointed a percussion position with the Detroit Civic Orchestra. He received scholarships from the Brevard Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival.

Amanda McCandless, a doctoral candidate in Clarinet Performance, received the Stephan and Josephine Ludewig Memorial Scholarship in May 2001.

Sarah McGuire, an undergraduate in Saxophone Performance, participated in a solo and quartet performance at the NASA Regional Saxophone Convention at the University of Dayton. She also attended the Faenza Music Institute in Italy for a Saxophone Quartet Workshop.

Amanda Merrow, an undergraduate in Voice Performance, performed as an alto soloist with the Grand Blanc and Flushing High School Choirs, with members of the Flint Symphony in a performance of Handel's Messiah.

Danilo Mezzadri, a master's student in Musicology, performed as a soloist with the Florianópolis Chamber Orchestra in Brazil; and was appointed instrumental music program director at Olivet College.

Xie Min, a doctoral candidate in Violin Performance, was appointed associate concertmaster of the Jackson Symphony and Lansing Symphony; and was appointed MSU Symphony Concertmaster.

Scott Moilanen, an undergraduate in Music Performance, won the Jackson Concert Band Concerto Competition.

Brent Mondoskin, a doctoral candidate in Saxophone Performance, participated in a solo and quartet performance at the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Saxophone Convention at the University of Dayton.

Lesley Anne Newsted, an undergraduate in Music Education, performed as soloist at the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Regional Saxophone Convention at the University of Dayton.

Jin Seok Park, a doctoral candidate in Clarinet Performance, was appointed second clarinet with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra.

Julie Platt, a doctoral candidate in Cello Performance, received the New Zealand Federation of University Women Fellowship.

Bryan Pokorney, a doctoral candidate in Trombone Performance, was appointed bass trombonist with the Midland Symphony Orchestra; substitute bass trombonist with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra; and instructor of low brass at the University of Michigan, Flint.

Ryan Powers, a master's student in Voice Performance and Musicology, received a supporting role in Master Class, a production by the Riverwalk Theater in Lansing (MI); and performed as a tenor soloist with the Adrian Symphony Orchestra.

Amy Prickett, a master's student in Voice Performance, performed as a soprano soloist with the Adrian Symphony Orchestra.

Todd Prickett, a doctoral candidate in Choral Conducting, performed as a member of the professional chorus at the Oregon Bach Festival.

Mary Procopio, a doctoral candidate in Flute Performance and master's student in Musicology/Ethnomusicology, was appointed flute instructor, chairperson of the Chamber Music Department, and coordinator of adult programs at the Flint Institute of Music School of Performing Arts.

John Richard, a doctoral candidate in Music Composition, had his composition Counterpoint for clarinet and bassoon performed at the Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers (CFAMC) National Conference in Indianapolis (IN).

Nicholas Roth, a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance, was temporarily appointed to the piano faculty at Alma College (MI).

Nico Schuler, a doctoral candidate in Music Theory, was appointed assistant professor and area coordinator of music theory at Southwest Texas State University.

Andrew Seigel, a doctoral candidate in Clarinet Performance, was appointed principal clarinet with the West Shore Symphony Orchestra (MI), and third bass clarinet with the Grand Rapids Symphony. He performed with the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra and the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. He was awarded a Dissertation Completion Grant for Fall 2003; a Research Enhancement Grant and Travel Grant that facilitated a concerto performance in Fresno (CA); an Arts and Letters Merit Scholarship; and the Stephan and Josephine Ludewig Memorial Scholarship in May 2001. He teaches on the faculty of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra Community Music School, and taught at the New England Music Camp in Summer 2001.

Donell Snyder, a doctoral candidate in Saxophone Performance, served as instructor of saxophone at Eastern Michigan University, and as guest faculty in a sabbatical position at the University of Michigan. As part of the Great Lakes Saxophone Quartet, Snyder performed Charles Ruggiero's Three Blues for Saxophone Quartet on a CD entitled, “Tribute to Adolphe Sax Series, Vol. 5,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album.

Scott Solkofske, a doctoral candidate in Saxophone Performance, performed in a solo and quartet performance at the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Saxophone Convention at the University of Dayton.

Sean Spicer, an undergraduate in Music Education, composed a piece entitled Bucimis, which was premiered by the MSU Symphony Band.

Evgeniy Sporov, a doctoral candidate in Violin Performance, was appointed principal second violin in the Jackson Symphony, and MSU Symphony Concertmaster.

Anand Raj Sukumaran, an undergraduate in Music Performance, received the Golden Spartan Scholarship in Fall 2001-- awarded to select international students based on academic achievement.

Minjeong C. Suh, a doctoral candidate in Piano Performance and master's student in Piano Pedagogy, was appointed as an instructor at Schoolcraft College (MI).

Mayumi Tayake, an undergraduate in Piano Performance, performed in the Shandelee Festival (NY).

Debra Terry, an undergraduate in Violin Performance, taught at the Flint Institute of Music (MI).

Richard Tirk, a doctoral candidate in Trumpet Performance, is a trumpet professor and teaches music appreciation and survey of rock and roll at the University of Michigan-Flint. He is also principal trumpet of the Midway and Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestras.

Suzanne Tirk, a doctoral candidate in Clarinet Performance, served as a temporary faculty member at Eastern Michigan University and Montana State University; and was appointed clarinet instructor at the MSU Community Music School. She was a featured performer at the 2002 International Clarinet and Saxophone Festival in Xian, China; and premiered a commissioned piece by William Averitt.

Luke Tomkinson, a master's student in Clarinet Performance, was appointed clarinet positions with the Grand Rapids and Midland Symphonies, and the Brevard Music Center Summer Festival Orchestra, where he was appointed assistant clarinet teacher.

Carrie Trax, an undergraduate in Vocal Music Education, performed the lead role in Guys & Dolls in six Bellevue Community Theater productions.

Richard Uren, a doctoral candidate in Orchestral Conducting, was appointed second trombone with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra.

Victor Uzur, a doctoral candidate in Cello Performance, recorded a new CD with his arrangements of music ranging from classical to pop.

John Waytena, a doctoral candidate in Clarinet Performance, was appointed a teaching position at Olivet College and plays principal clarinet in the Jackson Symphony. He received a research award, and a Fulbright Grant to attend Franz Lisct Academy in Budapest, Hungary.

Katherine Wolfe, an undergraduate in Vocal General Music Education, participated as a member of the professional chorus at the Oregon Bach Festival.
