Choral Ensembles Auditions 2017

2017 Audition Information for Choral Ensembles

All MSU ensembles include music majors and non-majors. University Chorale typically includes only music majors. All MSU ensembles (except Chamber Choir) are available for one credit, which may fulfill degree requirements (depending on the degree).

University Chorale

  • If you are interested in auditioning for University Chorale, conducted by Dr. Rayl, those auditions will be held on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, August 27, 28, 29, 30 in Music Practice Building, Room 211. All returning and transfer undergraduate music majors and all new graduate students in vocal performance must do these auditions.

    • In preparation for your audition please learn your part (SATB) from the excerpt found here
      • For Chorale auditions, all singers prepare your part (SATB) on the excerpt. You will be given a starting pitch and key center, and I will set the metronome for eighth note=250. You will then sing the excerpt without piano but with the metronome’s steady eighth note pulse.

State Singers

  • If you are interested in auditioning for State Singers, conducted by Dr. Reed, those auditions will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, August 28, 29, 30 in Music Practice Building, Room 210. Freshman music majors and all non-music majors should do these auditions.

    • No prepared vocal solo is required for this audition, but you will be asked to vocalize and sight read.

Women’s Chamber Ensemble

  • If you are interested in auditioning for Women’s Chamber Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Snow, those auditions will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday August 28, 29, 30, 31 in Music Practice Building, Room 205.

    • In preparation for your audition please learn the excerpt found here.
      • For WCE auditions, all singers prepare your part (S1, S2, A1, A2). You will be given a starting pitch and key center and will sing the excerpt without piano,
    • Please note that members of WCE who are vocal music majors must also sing in either Chorale or State Singers.
  • Women’s Chamber Ensemble excerpt:  Please prepare your most comfortable voice part (soprano or alto)  If you are a soprano, please learn BOTH soprano I and soprano II. If you are an alto, please prepare BOTH alto I and alto II. You will also vocalize. You will be evaluated on your ability to prepare music, melodically, rhythmically, with accuracy.

Other Choirs

  • If you are interested in Campus Choir, Women’s Glee Club, Men’s Glee Club, Choral Union, or Chamber Choir, you should attend the first rehearsal

MSU Choral Ensembles

MUS 127; University Chorale; MTWTh, 1:50 – 2:40 p.m.; Music Practice Bldg. #103; 45-50 members; highly selective; mostly graduates and upper level undergraduates; audition required (please see above for specific information). Traditional choral repertoire; several performances on-and off-campus each semester; Rayl. 

MUS 126; State Singers; MTWTh, 12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.; Music Practice Bldg. #103; 50-60 members; selective; mostly undergraduate music majors; audition required (please see above for specific information). Traditional choral repertoire; two performances on-campus each semester; Reed.

MUS 125:3; Women’s Chamber Ensemble; TTh, 4:10-5:30 p.m., Cook Recital Hall, Music Building; 32 members; selective; audition required (please see above for specific information). Choral repertoire for women’s voices, much of it composed within the past decade; several performances on- and off-campus each semester; Snow.

MUS 125:2; Men’s Glee Club; TTh, 4:10 – 5:30 p.m.; Music Practice Bldg. #103; 100 members. Rehearsal and performance of a broad range of choral repertoire; several on- and off-campus performances each semester; Reed. If interested please come to first rehearsal on August 31.

MUS 125:1; Women’s Glee Club; MW, 4:10 – 5:30 p.m.; Music Practice Bldg. #103; 120 members. Rehearsal and performance of a broad range of choral repertoire; several on- and off-campus performances each semester; Sengin. If interested, please contact Jennifer Sengin at senginje@msu.edu or come to the first rehearsal on August 30.

MUS 124; Choral Union; W, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.; Comm Arts & Sciences Bldg. #147; 125 members; mostly adult members of the greater Lansing community; brief audition/interview required. If interested, please come at 6:00 p.m. on September 7. Major choral-orchestral works; one or two performances on-campus each semester; Rayl. If interested please contact David Rayl at rayld@msu.edu or come to audition/interview and first rehearsal in Comm Arts #147 at 6:00 p.m. on September 6.

MUS 123; Campus Choir; TTh, 3:00 – 3:50 p.m.; Music Building 120; 50 members. Choral works from cultures around the world and from all stylistic periods; one performance each semester; Voorhees-Hall.
