A Season of Celebrations

MSU Music Announces Exciting 2019-20 Concert Season

International chamber soloists on the Fairchild Theatre stage.
The MSU College of Music announces the 2019-20 season, celebrating 10, 20 and 40 year anniversaries of select series, including its 150th year of Bands at MSU.


Community members are invited to join the MSU College of Music for a year of celebrations as several musical anniversaries align with the dedication of the College’s state-of-the-art music pavilion and building expansion. [see event highligts and dates listed below]

Honoring the milestones

The 2019-2020 “A Season of Celebrations” showcases milestones for some of the college’s most recognizable series and programs. Notable anniversaries include:

  • 150th Anniversary Celebration of Bands. Special symphonic, wind symphony and concert band performances will resound across campus in recognition of MSU’s astonishing band legacy, culminating in a season-end performances by a range of band ensembles with “guest and alumni” conductors.
  • 40th Anniversary of Jazz Spectacular. Special guests, and well-known performers jazz up the MSU campus with celebratory performances. The popular series features MSU musicians, high school jazz band competitions, live music, and other high-energy activities.
  • 20th Anniversary of the Ken and Sandy Beall Cello Plus Chamber Music Festival. This year’s festival features chamber and orchestral music with internationally renowned guests and acclaimed artist-faculty. Hearts of Vision Chamber Orchestra headlines the series opener, followed by two exiting evenings: one that fuses classic and contemporary chamber music and another inspired by the festival’s past and future seasons.
  • 10th Anniversary of the Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series. The beloved set of performances returns to celebrate the great works of master composers Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, and masterful works by composers from neighboring Americas to the south.
  • The 5th Annual Taylor Johnston Early Music Series. A line-up of gifted musicians, vocalists and ensembles from around the world perform Renaissance and Baroque music, often on period instruments.

Dawning a new era

Although themed with significant anniversaries, MSU’s 2019-20 season also celebrates the new Billman Music Pavilion and the 35,000-square foot addition to the Music Building. Construction will be complete in April 2020 with the first full academic year of use beginning in Fall 2020.

Celebrating signature performances

Patrons and audiences never fail to be inspired by the depth of the college’s unique series and programs, many of which are regarded as signature events, including numerous general admission recitals and performances by MSU orchestras, bands, jazz and choral ensembles are open to the public, and feature a range of repertoire.

  • MSU Federal Credit Union Showcase Series. This collection of community, seasonal and family-focused events includes the Peace, Joy and Sounds of the Season choral performance, A Jazzy Little Christmas and the Wagner Chamber Music Competition Showcase. The GRAMMY-winning vocal project Roomful of Teeth adds to the eclectic slate and will marvel attendees with an expressive exploration of vocal traditions.
  • MSU Federal Credit Union Jazz Artist in Residence. Now in it’s seventh year, this program brings high-level and legendary jazz talent to the MSU campus to mentor students, tour the state, and perform for the MSU community. This year’s exceptional artists include Tanya Darby, trumpet; Kenny Washington, drums; Bruce Barth, piano; and Terell Staffod, trumpet.
  • MSU Opera Theatre. Visionary artists and talented vocalists bring two fully staged and costumed productions with the MSU Symphony Orchestra.
  • Artist-Faculty Recital Series sponsored by WKAR. The best of the best!  From MSU to the world’s biggest stages—New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and concert halls in Asia, Europe, and South America—MSU artists proudly present music to the local community
  • Orchestra, Choir, Jazz and Band Ensembles. The season is packed with superb classical and jazz performances by excellent MSU artists and special guests at Cobb Great Hall of Wharton Center for Performing Arts and Fairchild Theatre in the MSU Auditorium.

“A Season of Celebrations” runs September through April. College of Music events take place at Fairchild Theatre, the Cobb Great Hall in Wharton Center, Cook Recital Hall and Demonstration Hall.

General admission tickets and reserved seat event series will go on sale to the public August 20.
