Suggested Audition Materials

Flute

Undergraduate and Music Minor

  • All major and  minor scales in all forms through the full range of the instrument.
  • Two contrasting etudes from books such as Anderson (op. 21, op. 33, or higher opus), Berbiquier (18 studies), Kohler, or Boehm.
  • Two solos to demonstrate tone, technique, and musicianship (preferably of contrasting periods, e.g., Bach “Sonata in Eb,” Fauré “Fantasie”).

Master of Music

Applicants are required to submit prescreening recordings by December 1.  Upload the videos to the Digital Portfolio section of the College of Music Supplemental Application.  You will be given access to the Digital Portfolio after the College of Music Supplemental Applicantion is submitted. The recording (video preferred; audio-only acceptable) should contain two contrasting works and quality must be sufficient to make a reasonable judgment of ability. Recordings will be reviewed by a committee from the woodwind area beginning the week following the December 1 deadline. You will be notified via email as to whether or not you have been invited for a live audition. Recordings received after December 1 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

On-campus Audition Requirements

  • Play three contrasting works from different style periods (one for solo flute).
  • A minimum of four orchestral excerpts.
  • Demonstration of memory strongly recommended.

Although repertoire selection and performance in the audition bear great importance, final acceptance is based on the demonstration of talent, dedication, and the desire to achieve excellence rather than solely upon the level of proficiency already achieved.
