Suggested Audition Materials

Saxophone

An accompanist is neither required nor provided. You may bring an accompanist at your own discretion.

Undergraduate

  • Prepare all major and harmonic minor scales demonstrating the complete normal range of the instrument.
  • Choose one etude from Ferling/Mule 48 Studies after Ferling or Berbiguier/Mule 18 Studies.
  • Prepare one of the following works or a major work of similar scope and difficulty:

Master of Music

Applicants are required to submit prescreening recordings by December 1. Upload the videos to the Digital Portfolio section of the College of Music Supplemental Application. You will be given access to the Digital Portfolio after the College of Music Supplemental Applicantion is submitted.  The recording should contain two contrasting works and quality must be sufficient to make a reasonable judgment of ability. Recordings will be reviewed by a committee from the woodwind area beginning the week following the December 1 deadline. You will be notified via email as to whether or not you have been invited for a live audition. Recordings received after December 1 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Live Audition:

  • All major, natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales and arpeggios demonstrating the complete normal range of the instrument.
  • Prepare two works, one a selection of your choice and one from the following list:

  • Prepare a full-length recital consisting of four contrasting pieces (total audition will be 30 minutes in length) that represents a variety of compositional genres. Written program notes of the works should be prepared and presented to the committee.
  • One of the compositions presented must be a concerto performed from memory. Works prepared should prepared in their entirety.
  • Choose one concerto, two sonatas, and an unaccompanied work from each of the below categories (complete works only):
