COLLEGE-WIDE FUNDS

Diversity & Inclusion Outreach in Music – AE060909
This fund was created to support efforts to recruit highly talented students to the College of Music from diverse backgrounds who will contribute to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the College. Funds may also be used to foster collaboration, engage in training sessions, bring guest speakers/lecturers, and build diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging efforts/opportunities in the College of Music. 

The Venice L. Peek College of Music Scholarship Fund – AE0644
Established by Venice L. Peek, this fund is awarded to highly talented undergraduate or graduate students who will contribute to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the College of Music because of life experiences and those who have exhibited leadership skills, faced adversity and shown an interest in multiculturalism and diversity.

College of Music Annual Fund – AE06
Contributions to this unrestricted fund are critical for the College of Music as new and innovative ways are sought to enhance the integrity of our academic and performance programs.

College of Music Scholarship / Fellowship Fund – AE060739
Recipients shall be selected on the basis of demonstrated musical talent and the needs of the College of Music. 

College of Music Concert Sponsorships – AE060756
Sponsorships provide funding for guest artist travel, lodging, stipend and other needs related to concert programming.  Concert sponsorships begin at $1,000. Contact the College of Music Advancement Office at 517-353-9872 to secure your sponsorship.

College of Music Endowment Fund – AE0615
Private support of this fund will provide funds in perpetuity that can be used by the dean of the college to enhance student recruitment, travel for student ensembles, instrument acquisition.

College of Music Entrepreneurship – AE060765
Contributions to this fund supports Running Start, the multi-disciplinary program in the College of Music that helps equip students for life as a working musician in the 21st century. Running Start prepares students to creatively channel their passions into vibrant careers by providing individual career coaching, events and workshops, entrepreneurial opportunities, performance opportunities, engagement with faculty and alumni, online resources for internships, jobs, auditions, and more.

College of Music Instrument and Equipment Fund – AE0613
Making sure our students have access to suitable and appropriate instruments and equipment is vital. Contributions to this fund are used toward associated costs of maintenance and acquisition of instruments and technology that are necessary to the success of our students.

Student Special Experience Fund in the College of Music – AE060832
Provides enhanced learning experiences for students enrolled in the College of Music, through student/ensemble travel opportunities outside of Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton counties to peer-reviewed competitions and performances/conferences of exceptional caliber and/or through guest artist visits designed to engage with students through master classes, networking opportunities and guest lectures.

College of Music Student Emergency Fund – AE060794
Gifts to the College of Music Student Emergency Fund will provide financial support to the students who most need financial help. The College of Music is a small college with a high percentage of out-of-state and international students that have unique financial hardships in addition to the stressors and challenges of daily college life. During difficult times, our students should be able to look to the institution they trust most for assistance in covering their bills, living expenses, emergency travel funds, and beyond to help them continue to live and learn.

Dave Catron Endowed Scholarship in Music – AE0674
Established by David L. Catron, former Associate Director and Director of Undergraduate Studies and Director of the Spartan Marching Band.  This fund supports music majors whose primary instrument is in woodwinds, brass or percussion.

Dortha J. and John D. Withrow Endowed Fund for Excellence in Teaching in the College of Music – AE0688
Established by Dortha J. and John D. Withrow to recognize outstanding faculty members who have rendered distinguished service to the University and their students through excellence in instructional, performance and/or scholarly activities.

Eldon C. Rosegart Endowed Scholarship Fund in Instrumental Music – AE0695
Established by Eldon C. Rosegart out of gratitude for the help and encouragement that he received from Leonard Falcone, director of orchestras, and various faculty members as a student musician in percussion and string bass, drum major of the Spartan Marching Band, and manager of the orchestra.  Recipients of this scholarship shall be instrumental music majors in the area of winds, percussion or strings. Preference will be given to Spartan Marching Band drum majors who meet scholarship criteria.

Robert Spaulding Gulliver Endowed Scholarship in Music – AE06775
Established in memory of Robert Spaulding Gulliver by Robert Ray Gulliver (son) and Jo Anne Kaye Gulliver.  Robert Spaulding Gulliver was one of the original members of the MSU Alumni Band, founded by Leonard Falcone.  Recipients of this scholarship must be a music major pursuing a degree in instrumental performance in the area of woodwinds, strings, piano or brass.

Virginia (Mills) and Douglas F. Jewell Endowed Dean's Scholarship in the College of Music – AE06077
Established by Virginia and Douglas Jewell in honor of Dean James Forger to acknowledge his efforts over his tenure to make the former School of Music an outstanding College of Music.  This fund may be awarded for student recruitment and/or retention at the discretion of the dean and will address areas of greatest need.

The Walter Verdehr and Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr Trio Endowment – AE060820
To ensure the tradition of excellence in the Verdehr Trio repertoire continues, the Walter Verdehr and Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr Trio Endowment was established in June 2014. This fund was established in honor of Elsa and Walter Verdehr’s  30/40/50 Anniversary: 30th Anniversary of the Verdehr Summer Series at Wharton Center; 40th Anniversary of the Verdehr Trio; and the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Elsa Verdehr and 46th Anniversary of Dr. Walter Verdehr on faculty in the MSU College of Music. This fund, which will last in perpetuity, will provide dollars annually to promote the Verdehr Trio repertoire for a clarinet, violin, and piano ensemble. Income from the endowment will be used to provide scholarships for graduate or performance diploma students of the highest caliber who are incoming or currently enrolled. Funds may also be used for ensemble costs related to travel, lodging, and recording subsidies.

College of Music National Leadership Council Endowed Scholarship – AE060893
To celebrate and mark the public launch of MSU’s Empower Extraordinary Campaign, and to ensure that the Dean of the College of Music has an opportunity to recruit and retain highly talented students, in November 2014, the College of Music National Leadership Council established a named endowed scholarship/fellowship to provide substantial support in perpetuity.  Recipients may be undergraduate, graduate or diploma candidates of exceptional talent.

Stanley and Selma Hollander Endowment for Chamber Music in the College of Music – AE060801
Expenditures from the Endowment will be use to secure exceptionally talented guest artists for chamber music performances and to present master classes.

Belle S. Harris and Julius N. Harris Endowed Visiting Artists Fund in the College of Music – AE06087
Expenditures from the fund shall be used to cover expenses related to bringing visiting artists to campus for performances, master classes, residencies and other interactions with students and the community. 


BANDS

MSU Bands – AE0601
Donations to this fund help secure guest artists, conductors, and composers; travel for the Wind Ensemble to peer-reviewed regional and national conferences; funds to commission new works and to subsidize recording opportunities for the Wind Ensemble; and special scholarships for students to participate in University Bands.

Leonard Falcone Endowed Music Scholarship – AE0603
Leonard Falcone (1899 – 1985) was the beloved Director of Bands from 1927 – 1967. During his 40-year tenure as Director of Bands, he guided the MSU Bands to national prominence. Contributions to this fund provide scholarships for full-time undergraduate or graduate music majors. Awardees are selected by the Director of Bands.

Wind Symphony Travel Fund – AE060722
Funds will be used to cover travel, food and lodging expenses for student travel opportunities to peer-reviewed competitions or other travel opportunities of performance distinction.

John L. Whitwell Band Scholarship – AE06072
Established in honor of John L. Whitwell in recognition of his thirteen years of service to MSU as director of bands, professor of music, and chair of the conducting area. This fund awards annual student scholarships to deserving music majors participating in MSU Bands. 

Kenneth G. Bloomquist Band Scholarship – AE069
Established in honor of Kenneth G. Bloomquist in recognition of his twenty-three years of service to MSU as director of bands and director of the School of Music. This fund awards annual student scholarships to deserving music majors participating in MSU Bands. 


BRASS AND PERCUSSION

Brass Area Fund – AE060788
Provides support specifically for the needs of the brass faculty, including student support and funds to bring guest artists and master teachers to campus for educational and unique performance opportunities.

Percussion Area Fund – AE060789
Provides support specifically for the needs of the percussion faculty, including student support and funds to bring guest artists and master teachers to campus for educational and unique performance opportunities.

J. Robert Houston III and Eileen G. Houston Brass Scholarship – AE06783
This fund awards student scholarships to enthusiastic and deserving full-time music major(s) studying trumpet or trombone.

Marie Grafius Orchestral French Horn Scholarship Fund – AE06076
This fund awards scholarships to deserving students studying French horn who are also members of the MSU Symphony Orchestra.


COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOLS

Detroit

MSU Community Music School (Detroit) – AE06590
CMS-D provides high-quality music education for children from low-income families, as well as seniors and individuals with special needs. By providing music education resources to families in the City of Detroit, CMS-D is investing in skill development for a stronger community and helping put youth on the path to college and careers.

Jubilee Financial Assistance Endowment for Community Music School (Detroit) – AE060826
Expenditures from the endowment support the Community Music School (CMS) Detroit at the discretion of its Director to provide financial assistance for students who demonstrate need.


East Lansing

MSU Community Music School (East Lansing) – AE0659
Gifts to this fund provide support all music education and music therapy programs at the Community Music School, as well as program enhancement and curriculum development. The mission of CMS is to provide comprehensive music education – quality instruction, related music services, and educational programs – for children, lifelong learners, and persons with special needs.

Community Music School Music Therapy Clinical Services (East Lansing) – AE0699
Donations to Music Therapy Clinical Services help support all music therapy programmatic needs at CMS. This includes instruments, equipment, the Celebrate Abilities recital, and tuition assistance for clinical services clients. Gifts to this fund are matched by the Dart Foundation, up to $5,000 annually.

Community Music School Children’s and Youth Choirs (East Lansing) – AE0665
Support helps meet all needs within the Children and Youth Choirs, including the MSU Children’s Choir. Program needs include tution assistance, uniforms, music, travel, and the commissioning of new works.

Community Music School New Horizons Band (East Lansing) – AE06401
Gifts to this fund provide support of the New Horizons Band – an ensemble for adults who wish to learn to play a band instrument for the first time, or to relearn an instrument.

Community Music School Tuition Assistance Fund-All Programs (East Lansing) – AE0640
Gifts to this fund provide tuition assistance for non-degree seeking students of all ages enrolled in the Community Music School. Tuition assistance is awarded based on students’ household income. Through tution assistance, CMS can advance in its mission to provide comprehensive music education and music therapy to all within the Greater Lansing community including low-income students.

Community Music School Suzuki (East Lansing)AE06402
Through the Suzuki method, children have studied music at CMS since the school opened. CMS offers Suzuki method instruction for violin, viola, cello, piano, guitar and harp. Gifts to this fund help support all Suzuki program needs.

Community Music School Folk (East Lansing) – AE06403
Support helps meet the needs of the folk program offered at both CMS and in partnership with the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities.

Gifts support composing at CMS, including CMS’s Composer-In-Residence.

Recording and Production Fund for the MSU Children’s Choir (East Lansing) – AE0679
Donations to this fund make it possible for the Grammy Award-winning MSU Children’s Choir and other youth choral programs to record and produce.

Eric ‘RicStar’ Winter Music Therapy Camp Expendable Scholarship Fund (East Lansing)AE06771
The ‘RicStar’ Camp is a one-of-a-kind, inclusive camp for all persons with special needs and their siblings. All dollars are used to provide tuition assistance to campers with financial need. Gifts to this fund are matched by the Dart Foundation, up to $5,000 annually.

Eric Winter Memorial Fund for the Music Therapy Clinical Services Program (East Lansing) – AE0677
Endowment funds support music therapy clinical services and the Eric ‘RicStar’ Winter Music Therapy Camp. Gifts to this fund are matched by the Dart Foundation, up to $5,000 annually.

Jessica Emery Schneider Endowed Music Therapy Services Fund (East Lansing) – AE060810
Funds will be used for tuition assistance to at least one Music Therapy Clinical Services client attending the Eric “RicStar” Winter Music Therapy Camp, or future music therapy services program. The recipient will be known as the “JESS Prize.” Funds may also be used to purchase and maintain tablet computers, tablet accessories, music apps, headphones, speakers, and other technology/tools and instruments to enhance Music Therapy Services for clients who will listen or actively participate in music-making activities to more fully engage embrace and enjoy the world. The table computers shall be known as “Jess Tablets."

CONDUCTING

Charles K. Smith Endowed Fellowship in Graduate Choral Conducting – AE0671
Established in honor of Charles K. Smith in recognition of his many years of service as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at MSU. This fund awards annual scholarships to graduate students enrolled in Choral Conducting who demonstrate outstanding ability, exceptional musicianship and leadership. 

John L. and Carole A. Whitwell Endowed Fund in Wind Conducting – AE060720
Established by John L. Whitwell (former professor of conducting and director of bands) and Carole A. Whitwell (retired faculty College of Human Medicine) to assist with recruitment of the finest wind conductors for the College of Music.  This fund awards annual scholarships to deserving graduate students in Wind Conducting.

Kenneth G. Bloomquist Fellowship in Wind Conducting – AE068
Established in honor of Kenneth G. Bloomquist in recognition of his twenty-three years of service to MSU as director of bands and director of the School of Music. This fund awards annual scholarships to deserving graduate students in Wind Conducting.


JAZZ STUDIES

College of Music Jazz Studies Program – AE0693
Join the Jazz Club with your gift to Jazz Studies Programs. Gifts to this program provide funds for student scholarships, travel funds, the purchase of jazz music, and instrument purchase and maintenance.

Jazz Studies Endowment – AE0630
Expenditures are used to advance the curriculum and programs of the MSU Jazz Studies Program, i.e., visiting artists, student travel, student scholarships equipment and related programs in jazz.

Bruce and Sharon Ashley Endowment for Students in Jazz Studies – AE064011
Expenditures from this student endowment support the areas of greatest need to include scholarships, travel funds, recording costs or other student needs. 

Drs. Lou Anna K. and Roy J. Simon Scholarship Fund – AE0697
By unanimous vote of those present, the Michigan State University Trustees at its November 14, 2003 meeting established a scholarship fund to recognize Dr. Lou Ann K. Simon’s outstanding work as both Interim President and Provost during President McPherson’s leave of absence in Iraq.  Funds shall be used to provide financial aid to students in the College of Music, especially students in the Jazz Studies Program.

Ken and Sandy Beall Endowed Scholarship in Jazz Studies – AE06301 
Scholarship recipients shall be College of Music students enrolled in the Jazz Studies Program, or incoming Freshman students. Special consideration shall be given to undergraduate and incoming undergraduate students, with the option of continuing a scholarship/fellowship award. Recipients must be talented jazz studies majors (or in the process of becoming) and remain in strong academic standing. 

Patrick and Victoria McPharlin Guest Artist Endowment for Jazz Studies in the College of Music – AE060890
To ensure the opportunity for the faculty artists in the Jazz Studies Program to present exceptionally high quality jazz concerts, fund will be used for guest artist fees, travel, lodging, publicity, marking and program expenses, outreach and travel expenses, as well as costs associated with concerts off campus. 

Robert P. Busby Fund in Jazz Studies – AE06350
Established in memory of Robert P. Busby, beloved Creole Gallery owner, jazz lover, and Lansing legend.  This fund provides support for the Jazz Studies Area, including student scholarships and travel opportunities.

Ruth Priscilla Simms Hamilton Endowed Scholarship in Jazz Studies – AE0684
Established in memory of Dr. Ruth Priscilla Simms Hamilton who was an MSU professor of sociology and urban affairs and was a core faculty member of the African Studies Center and Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.  Dr. Hamilton was extremely helpful during the development of the Jazz Studies Area and this fund celebrates her love of music and devotion to hard work, excellence, and service to others.


MUSIC EDUCATION

Henry M. and Phyllis J. Nelson Endowed Scholarship in Music Education – AE060745
Established in honor of Henry and Phyllis Nelson, College of Music alumni and well-respected music educators.  This fund supports upper level undergraduate students majoring in music education who participate in a student ensemble.

Music Education Area Fund – AE061125
Provides support specifically for the needs of the music education faculty, including student support and funds to bring guest artists and master teachers to campus for educational and unique performance opportunities.

Music Education Endowed Scholarship – AE060744
This endowment is the first university initiated scholarship supporting the recruitment of talented and worthy undergraduate music education students. This fund allows the Music Education faculty to attract strong performers who also demonstrate other attributes that are essential to excellence in teaching, such as personal skills, the desire to work with students, a broad-based musicianship, and strong academic skills.

The Emil G. & Doris E. Ellis Family Endowed Scholarship in Music Education – AE0632
Established in honor of Doris Ellis by her husband Emil G. Ellis and their children. This endowment is intended to recognize and support upper division undergraduate students majoring in music education.


MUSIC THEORY

Music Theory Area Fund – AE060792
Provides support specifically for the needs of the music theory faculty, including student support and funds to bring guest artists and master teachers to campus for educational and unique performance opportunities.

Music Theory Student Research/Professional Development – AE060849
Provides support to graduate students as they move along the path toward becoming professional scholars. This support takes the form of travel to professional conferences, participation in workshops and other professional-development opportunities, and funding for student research projects. 

Music Theory Teaching and Learning Excellence Fund – AE060850
Provides support for initiatives that directly impact student learning and student success at the graduate and undergraduate levels. This support takes the form of funding to increase the tutoring capacity of the Music Theory Learning Center, which aims to support student success in the undergraduate core curriculum in music theory. It also takes the form of books, technology, software, and other materials used by graduate assistants in their development as teachers.

Music Theory Visiting Scholars Fund – AE060851
Provides funds to bring distinguished guest scholars to the Michigan State University campus. These residencies play a vital role in the music theory area by presenting cutting-edge research through guest lectures, by working directly with our students in guest-taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and by mentoring the emerging scholars in our graduate program on research, pedagogy, and professional development.


MUSICOLOGY

Musicology/Ethnomusicology Area Fund – AE060791
Provides support specifically for the needs of the musicology/ethnomusicology faculty, including student support and funds to bring guest artists and master teachers for campus of educational and unique performance opportunities.

Stanley and Selma Hollander Endowed Fund in Musicology – AE06776
Long-time friends and supporters of the College of Music, Stanley and Selma Hollander established this fund to support student study and understanding of western music by providing funds for musicology lectures, travel, student fellowships and related programmatic needs.


ORCHESTRAS

Camille D. McKinley Endowment for the MSU Orchestras – AE06252
A long-time supporter of the arts at MSU and friend of the MSU Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Camille McKinley, established a named endowment for the benefit of the College of Music’s orchestras. This fund supports equipment and instruments acquisitions, provides student travel opportunities, student scholarships, commissioning works, funds guest artists, purchases / rents music, as well as other areas of need directly benefitting the MSU Orchestra Program.

Doris H. Dahl and Norman Huver Scholarship for Orchestras – AE060803
Established in memory of Doris H. Dahl, former assistant to the dean of the Broad College of Business, and lover of classical music and Opera.  This fund supports music majors participating in an orchestral ensemble with a preference given to students whose primary instrument is violin or cello.

Marie Grafius Orchestral French Horn Scholarship Fund – AE06076
Awarded to a student whose primary instrument is French horn and is a member of the Symphony Orchestra.  The recipient must demonstrate their capacity to achieve educational and professional goals, the motivation to achieve these goals, and the initiative to seek opportunities to further their progress.

MSU Orchestras Endowment Fund in Honor of Leon Gregorian – AE062520
Established to celebrate and honor Maestro Leon Gregorian on the occasion of his retirement from MSU after twenty-seven years of exceptional service. This endowment will fund areas of greatest need for the MSU Orchestras, including student scholarships, the purchase or rental of music, ensemble travel opportunities, commissions of new orchestral work, and guest artists.

Orchestra Enhancement Fund AE0625
Private support of the MSU Orchestra provides much-needed funding for student scholarships, rental and purchase of music, guest soloists, and opportunities to commission new works for the orchestra.

Ronald J. and Helen M. Priest Endowment in Support of Classical Music Performance – AE060708
Established by Ron and Helen Priest in honor of their love of classical music.  This scholarship will be awarded to a student whose primary area of study is an orchestra instrument.


PIANO

Piano Area Fund – AE060724
Provides support specifically for the needs of our piano faculty, including student support and funds to bring guest artists and master teachers to campus of educational and unique performance opportunities.

Ruth Minks Charles Endowed Scholarship in Piano – AE0645
Established by Ruth Minks Charles to complement her life-long interest in the study and teaching of piano.  This fund supports graduate or undergraduate piano majors who show particular interest in and ability for collaborative artistry.

Spencer and Eleanore Maurer Memorial Scholarship in Piano – AE06981
Established in memory of Spencer and Eleanore Maurer by Robert (son) and Catherine Workman to honor their love of music.  Robert and Catherine are also establishing this fund out of their devotion to Michigan State University and their firm belief in a strong liberal arts education.  This fund supports music majors whose primary area of study is piano.

Ralph Votapek Endowed Scholarship in Music – AE0618
Established in honor of Ralph Votapek, professor of piano and artist-in-residence, to celebrate his many contributions to Michigan State University and the Mid-Michigan community.  Recipients of this scholarship shall be graduate students aspiring to earn a masters of music.

The Marie S. Black Endowed Scholarship in Music – AE060732
Established to honor Marie S. Black’s love and dedication to music. Marie has served the community for many years as a dedicated piano teacher, accompanist, performer, and vocalist. This scholarship supports music majors studying piano.

Ken and Sandy Beall Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship in Piano – AE060894
Recipients will be undergraduate, graduate or diploma candidate pianists who will be enrolled in a study abroad program, with a preference for the Summer Study Abroad in Todi, Italy.

Celebrating the Spectrum Music Festival – AE062522
Celebrating the Spectrum is a week-long festival at the College of Music’s newly renovated Cook Recital Hall on the beautiful MSU campus. Funds support travel and lodging for qualified precollege pianists on the Autism Spectrum who will participate in private lessons, master classes, lectures and Pilates. Funds will also support student mentors for each participant.


STRINGS

Strings Area Fund – AE060787
Provides support specifically for the needs of the strings faculty, including student support and funds to bring guest artists and master teachers to campus for educational and unique performance opportunities.

Cello Plus AE06680
Covers expenses related to this four-concert chamber music series, including guest artist travel, lodging and stipend requirements, and, as needed, the rental of instruments.

Johnson Coleman Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Strings – AE06660
Established Dr. Richard Johnson in support of the String Area. Recipients shall be selected on the basis of their musical and performance potential, as well as their respective contributions to the orchestra and chamber music programs.

Louis Potter Memorial Scholarship in Cello – AE060746
Established in memory of Professor Louis Potter by former student Charlotta Klein Ross. Scholarship recipients shall be selected whose primary instrument is cello.

Stanley and Selma Hollander Endowed Scholarship for First Chair in Cello – AE0668
Long-time friends and supporters of the College of Music, Stanley and Selma Hollander established this fund to support members of the Symphony Orchestra serving as principal cello.

Alexander Schuster Endowed Principal Violinist Award – AE0626

Spencer and Eleanore Maurer Memorial Scholarship in Violin – AE0698
Established in memory of Spencer and Eleanore Maurer by Robert (son) and Catherine Workman to honor their love of music.  Robert and Catherine are also establishing this fund out of their devotion to Michigan State University and their firm belief in a strong liberal arts education.  This fund supports music majors whose primary area of study is violin.

Romeo Tata Graduate Fellowship in Music – AE0617
Established by the family of Dr. Romeo Tata, former professor of violin and music theory, as a tribute to commitment and enthusiasm to his students. Recipients shall be full-time graduate students who are string performance majors who intend to pursue a career as a string player.


SPARTAN MARCHING BAND

Spartan Championship Drums Drum Corps International Scholarship – AE060747
Established through gifts from MSU alumni, donors and friends to benefit worthy members of the Spartan Marching Band Drumline to participate in the Drum Corps International Competition / International Festival.

Spartan Championship Drums Endowment – AE06773
Members of the 1966 MSU Drumline established The Spartan Championship Drums Endowment Fund in 2004. It provides annual support for drumline competitions, exhibitions and related travel expenses for the SMB Drumline and Competition Drumline, as well as scholarship support to recruit and retain outstanding rudimental drummers.

Brough Endowed Leadership Award in SMB – AE067777
Since 1975, Glen Brough has served MSU and the Spartan Marching Band (SMB) in many influential roles to lead, teach and develop leaders with an unwavering commitment to the tradition of excellence of the SMB. Glen retired from MSU in 2019. SMB Alumni and friends came together to raise $50,000 to fund The Brough Endowed SMB Leadership Award to provide tuition scholarships to SMB members who meet qualifications of leadership positions and demonstrate a capacity to achieve educational and professional goals, along with the motivation to seek personal growth and development opportunities.

Brough Spartan Marching Band Leadership Award AE06777
Established in memory of Barbara S. Brough, mother of Glen Brough, whose passion for music and support of Glen’s involvement in the Spartan Marching Band was were unending.  Recipients must hold an elected or appointed position within the Spartan Marching Band, have achieved academic success, and demonstrate need for scholarship support.

David S. and Susan M. Krawczyk Endowed Scholarship in the Spartan Marching Band – AE060738
Established in appreciation for the Spartan Marching Band’s commitment to excellence and is award to students who uphold this standard in their performance and in their academics.

Walter Adams Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Marching Band – AE0648
Established in memory of Walter Adams, loyal patron of the Spartan Marching Band and former University President, this scholarship is awards to band members who demonstrate excellence within the band program and academically. 

William B. Stutler Marching Band Scholarship – AE0612
Established in honor of William B. Stutler’s fiftieth birthday by Robert J. Funking to celebrate the outstanding leadership and spirit exhibited during his time with the Spartan Marching Band as a twirler, head drum major and graduate assistant to Leonard Falcone, former band director.  Recipients shall be members of Spartan Marching Band who demonstrate the need for financial support.  Consideration is given to the drum major first.

Leonard Falcone Memorial Bands Scholarship Endowment, Initiated by Paul Hollinger – AE060709
This scholarship will be awarded to non-music majors who perform in both the Spartan Marching Band and one of the auditioned concert bands.

Spartan Marching Band – AE0607
The 300-member Spartan Marching Band depends on private contributions to fund many of its expenses throughout the year. Gifts to the fund underwrite travel expenses for away game performances, uniforms, instrument and equipment acquisitions, and instructional needs.

SMB Director’s Special Fund – AE06070
Funds in this account are utilized by the director of the Spartan Marching Band for large or long-term special projects and program enhancements as they arise.  Other use of funds may include equipment replacement or upgrades, instrument acquisition, and travel needs.

SMB Jackets Sponsorship Fund AE060704
This fund was initiated thanks to the generosity of Ken and Carole Yerrick who donated funds to cover the cost of band jackets for the 2011 SMB freshman class.  Ken, an SMB alumnus and grandfather of an SMB member, wanted to provide this special and symbolic gift as a measure of honor for the band members.  Since their generous gift, many others have joined the Yerricks in providing jacket funds for future incoming members, including a gift from Tom and Lupe Izzo.

This fund is utilized for the purchase and restoration of instruments and equipment for the Spartan Marching Band.

This fund is utilized for purchase of equipment and expenses related to the Cymbal Section of the Spartan Marching Band.

The scholarship is open to any member of the Spartan Marching Band, with strong preference to a student from Midland County, Michigan.

Knas Family Band Jacket Endowment Fund in the Spartan Marching Band – AE060706
Expenditures from the endowment will be used to support the purchase of Band Jackets for first-year members of the Spartan Marching Band who are in good standing. 

Elizabeth S. Rimpau Memorial Scholarship for Euphonium in the Spartan Marching Band – AE060771
Established by Joy Rimpau, a euphonium player in the Spartan Marching Band from 1973-1975, in memory of her mother, Elizabeth S. Rimpau.  This scholarship will benefit a euphonium player in the Spartan Marching Band.


VOCAL ARTS / OPERA / CHORAL PROGRAMS

Carl and Alleah Armeling Endowed Graduate Voice Fellowship – AE0647
Established by former voice faculty and director of Women’s Glee Club, Ethel J. Armeling (daughter), in honor of her parents’ support and encouragement of her musical career.  This fellowship is intended to aid and encourage vocal students who are seriously motivated to pursue a career in vocal performance and/or vocal education, with a preference given to mezzo-sopranos.

Clare S. Mackey Endowed Fund in Voice – AE06348
Established in honor of former First Lady of Michigan State University Clare S. Mackey, to recognize her life-long professional accomplishments, love of music and her commitment to the musical arts.  This scholarship will fund a graduate quarter-time assistantship or undergraduate scholarship.

Frank and Ruby Zara Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Voice – AE0643
Established by former voice faculty member Meredith Zara in memory of her parents, Frank and Ruby Zara.  Recipients must be enrolled in a master’s program with a declared major in voice with a 3.5 GPA, or an upperclassman with a 3.0 GPA.  Preference given to a soprano.

Helen Tretheway Endowed Voice Scholarship – AE063
Established by alumna Helen Tretheway to support a junior or senior pursuing a degree in voice.  Preference given to a soprano.

Leo and Dorothy Rohrstock (Rohr) Memorial Scholarship for Voice – AE0652
Established in memory of Leo and Dorothy Rohrstock to provide scholarship support for worthy voice students demonstrating scholastic excellence.

Gifts to this fund provide for scholarships or assistantships in choral conducting and other program-related purposes as recommended by the Choral Society board of directors and determined by the director of Choral Programs at MSU.

This fund provides financial support for graduate students in choral conducting through scholarships or assistantships. Since 1989, the fund has supported 45 MSU graduate students.

Established by Paul and Martha Niland to honor Charles K. Smith in recognition of his vision and leadership in reaching out to qualified singers within the Mid-Michigan community to establish the MSU Choral Union. This fund supports bringing guest artists in choral conducting and/or voice back to campus.

Established by alumnus and scholarship recipient Laurence M. Phillips to provide the same opportunity he had received as a student to present woodwinds students. This scholarship is offered specifically to incoming freshmen in the woodwinds area.
