Barbara Wagner Chamber Music Competition

The Barbara Wagner Chamber Competition highlights the importance of chamber music at MSU, encourages the formation of chamber music ensembles, supports the pursuit of entrepreneurship by ensembles and individuals, and provides a training ground for musicians to compete in external competitions.

The Competition consists of two parts: a student composer competition and a student performer competition. For information about the student composer competition, please see the composition area website. 

Who can apply?

  • Open to ensembles of 3-8 members
  • Each member of the group must be currently enrolled in MSU College of Music
  • Each member of the ensemble needs a signature from their applied faculty professor. 
  • Students may only participate in one ensemble.

Important dates:

  • Applications will be due on December 17, 2023
  • Finalists will participate in a virtual masterclass in mid-February 2024 (date TBD)
  • Final Showcase concert will occur on April 6, 2024 at 6:00 p.m.

Judges:

  • External judges are selected each year to provide a representative committee of chamber music artists.
  • 2023-24 judges:
    • First round: David Skidmore (percussion), Steve Williamson (winds), Brian Chin (trumpet)
    • Second round: Nathalie Joachim (winds), Melissa White (strings), Winston Choi (piano)
