About:

Edward Stumpp is a composer / improviser of electronic and electroacoustic music. His work focuses on implementations of machine listening, guided improvisation, visualized scores, and audio-visual music.

Edward began to study composition at Boise State University. During this period, he focused on creating a unique aesthetic, focusing on texture and sculptural approaches to composition. 

After graduating from Boise State University, Edward was accepted into the Master’s program at Mills College. Edward’s compositions began to expand on the vocabulary and interactions present between Acoustic Instruments and the Computer. Focusing primarily on applications of signal processing and guided improvisation, Edward’s work was presented not only at Mills college but also at Stanford University. In May 2012 he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Music Composition and Recording Media. 

After returning to Idaho, Edward was appointed adjunct professor of Music Technology and Computer Music at Boise State University in January of 2015. In August 2017, Edward was accepted into the composition program at Michigan State University. While there, his work shift into incorporation of audio-visual music/scores, techniques of machine listening, and improvisation. He received a Doctorate of the Musical Arts in 2020. His current work focusing on applications of Machine Listening. 

Currently, Edward is teaching at multiple institutions in Michigan. This includes: Alma College, Wayne State University, and Michigan State University. His classes range from introductory courses in electronic music to advanced synthesis techniques utilizing the computer program Max.
