Nicola Canzano is recognized as a leading expert in the composition and improvisation of baroque music. His baroque compositions have been performed at the prestigious Thiré festival led by William Christie, commissioned by Juilliard, and are used as course material in music theory at the University of Oregon. A returning guest lecturer at Juilliard on fugal improvisation, Nicola has also given presentations on improvisation in conjunction with his ensemble, Nuova Pratica, at Cornell and the University of Michigan, and has served as a panelist for the international conference “Improvisation in Historical Styles: Performance, Pedagogy, and Research” which took place in 2022. He is in demand as a thoughtful continuo player, having played under the batons of Richard Egarr, Masaaki Suzuki, with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, VERITÀ Baroque, and Juilliard415, among others. In addition to a degree in Historical Performance from Juilliard, Nicola holds degrees in music composition, physics, and harpsichord from the University of Michigan, and a graduate degree in physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
