The College of Music is participating in the MSU COVID-19 Early Detection Program. All members of the College community—faculty, staff, and students—who are frequently on or near campus are strongly encouraged to participate. Undergraduate students who are enrolled in in-person classes are required to participate. This allows you to play an easy, but crucial, role in the health of the College of Music community and the larger campus community.

The Early Detection Program is now open for Spring. Automated reminder messages are being sent to all registered participants. If you are not yet on campus, please disregard the reminders.

Feeling ill or believe you may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19? Please self-isolate and call the MSU COVID-19 Triage Hotline at 855-958-2678 for assistance.

Spartan Health Check Overview

Spartan Health Check is a new secure portal (MSU NetID required) where you can complete your daily health screening form, manage your weekly saliva testing, and see your test results (results will no longer be emailed). Based on those criteria, the system lets you know if you are clear to go to campus (GREEN), if you need to take action before coming to campus (YELLOW), or if you need to stay home (RED).

The color indicator will explain your status details and provide information on next steps. The goal is for your status to be green to participate in on-campus activities.

The image below explains the basic logic behind the system, to help you better understand your own status:

How the Spartan Spit Kit Early Detection Works

Tips for Timely Results

If you drop your sample off before 1 p.m. on your scheduled day, you should receive results around 9 p.m. the following evening.

Log on to Spartan Health Check and the system will indicate where your sample is in the process and may have results posted even before you receive a text or email alert that your results are ready.

Possible reasons for late results - try to avoid these issues!

  • Sample was dropped off after 1 p.m. (missed collection time).
  • Weekend drop off (presently, anything dropped after 1 p.m. Thursday will not get results until Monday night). Be sure to select a new drop-off day if you are currently registered for Friday or Saturday. Simply update your registration form by selecting a new day.
  • If your result notification is forwarded to another email account, there may be delays, spam etc..
  • Your sample wasn't logged so we can't connect the results to you - be sure to log the number on your sample vial!
  • Incorrect barcode was logged.
  • Sample is missing the barcode or the barcode is damaged and unreadable.
  • Sample was logged after results have already gone out for the day.
  • Sample deposited incorrectly (was not deposited into the correct bin or put in a trash can by mistake, sample not completely put in bin and it fell out).
  • Lab delays (should only be a few hours off if they occur).
  • Network issues preventing upload of results and messaging.

Positive Results and Next Steps

If you receive a positive result, please don't panic. The University Physician's office will be reaching out to make sure you're feeling OK and also to conduct contact tracing. If you're not feeling well, don't wait. Call the MSU COVID-19 Triage Line at 855-958-2678 and they can assist you right away.

The saliva test in the Early Detection Program is now a validated diagnostic test conducted under CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) regulations. A positive test result does NOT require confirmation with a nasal swab test so there is no need to take that extra step.

Individuals who are positive should stay home and avoid contact with other members of the household by staying in a specific room or area and using a separate bathroom, if available. For more information, check out the MSU COVID-19 information page.

Note: If you receive a positive result, Spartan Health Check will track your quarantine period and your participation in the Early Detection Program will be paused for 90 days (you won't have to participate during that time).
