Summer: Music Facility Access and Practice Room Protocols

Summer building hours will begin on Monday, May 3, 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

If you currently have access to the Music Building, that access will continue through the summer. If you need access to the Music Building, please contact either Associate Dean Rayl rayld@msu.edu or Associate Dean Kroth at kroth@msu.edu and provide the following information from your student ID:

  • Your name as it appears on your ID
  • Your APID
  • The prox # (six-digit number of the back of your ID beginning with * or +).

Beginning Monday, May 3, you will no longer be required to have an assigned practice room time. Rather, the following protocols will be in place:

General practice rooms may be used in 90-minute increments with a built-in 30-minute ‘refresh’ time following.

  • Entry and exit times will be staggered and will be POSTED ON THE DOOR.
  • Half the general rooms will only be accessible on the hour; the other half will only be accessible on the half hour.

Piano practice rooms may be used in 3-hour increments with a built-in 30-minute ‘refresh’ time.

  • Entry and exit times will be staggered and will be POSTED ON THE DOOR.

Percussion practice rooms may be used in 2-hour increments with a built-in 30-minute ‘refresh’ time.

  • Entry and exit times will be staggered and will be POSTED ON THE DOOR.

Jazz students have several options.

  • You may use any general practice room.
  • You may also use one of the 3 ‘combo’ rooms in 90-minute increments with a built-in 30-minute ‘refresh’ time. Entry and exit times will be staggered and will be POSTED ON THE DOOR.
  • Jazz drummers will continue to have access to the jazz percussion practice rooms. Entry and exit times will be staggered and will be POSTED ON THE DOOR.
  • Jazz pianists may use one of two assigned piano practice rooms (A049/A050). Entry and exit times will be staggered and will be POSTED ON THE DOOR.

Sanitation protocols will remain unchanged for practice rooms and they may be occupied by only one person.

You may continue to reserve time in performance halls, rehearsal rooms, and classrooms through the online reservation system.

  • You may sign out a classroom for individual practice alone or with up to two others but are limited to 5 hours per week.
  • You may sign out a large rehearsal room for ensemble rehearsal with more than 3 players but are limited to 5 hours per week. Large rehearsal rooms may not be used for individual practice.
  • Recording sessions continue to be permitted, but still require a contract. Students will now be permitted to bring in one individual to assist with recording (in addition to the applied teacher). No other guests are permitted.

If you currently have access to the music building, that access will continue through the summer. The protocols for practice room use will be slightly modified for the summer. Those protocols will be published next week. Stay tuned.

Destination Survey for Those Graduating This Spring

Graduating? Please fill out the MSU Destination Survey to confirm your next steps after graduating from MSU.

This survey helps us track the typical first destinations for our students, what successful students do during their college career, and helps current Spartans prepare for their future transition to the professional world. The survey only takes 2-3 minutes to complete, click here to access the survey.

Still not sure of your plans at this point? That’s OK, and we’re here to help. Connect with Christine Beamer through HandShake to explore possible options or prepare for your next steps.

On Us planning Committee

COVID Vaccine

Based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration to pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, yesterday MSU switched the type of vaccine offered to students to the two-dose Pfizer vaccine. All appointments previously made by students will be honored. You can click here to select an appointment to receive the Pfizer vaccine at the MSU Pavilion. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please check the appointment link often; new appointments are added regularly.

Recording Your Recital

Just a reminder that the use of outside recording personnel for student recitals in College of Music performance spaces is prohibited, as are family members, guests, and students not performing on the recital. You may use Recording Services or make your own recording using the equipment in each space. Be sure that you practice using the equipment during your dress rehearsal, and to give yourself enough time to test and confirm that all is working before your recital.

Undergraduate Research Funding

There is still Undergraduate Research funding available for summer conference attendance (in person or virtual), summer music festival travel, auditions, outreach projects, paper or project presentations, and other music related projects. Please consider applying! Click here for more information and Undergraduate Research applications. Application for late spring and summer projects is April 16, 2021. Late applications will be considered if funds are available.

CREATE! Micro Grants

The Dean’s Arts Advisory Council (DAAC, College of Arts and Letters) invites proposals for creating art and writing that respond critically and imaginatively to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. The application process for 12 micro-grants of $500 each is open to all undergraduates who remain enrolled at Michigan State University in Fall 2021. Please find the call attached. Click here to access the text-only application. The 2020 CREATE! Winners Exhibit can be found at their website.

It's On Us Week

It’s On Us planning committee is in the midst of their Spring Week of Action events, taking place April 12th-17th, 2021. Protocol Violations

Although most students continue to observe the College’s health and safety protocols, we have sanctioned our students this week for serious violations. One for occupying a room well beyond the end of the scheduled rehearsal time and into the refresh time and three for flagrantly ignoring the mask requirement. A reminder that the ONLY person able to attend a student recital is the applied teacher. You may not use outside audio/video technicians to record your recital. Students who violate the protocols will be sanctioned.

Commencements

There have (understandably) been a number of questions regarding commencement ceremonies at the end of the semester. Decisions about commencements, including for whom they’re offered, the mode in which they’re offered, and where and when they will take place, were made by the central administration.

  • College of Music Undergraduates, Friday, April 30, 5:00 PM, Auditorium Parking Lot
  • All master’s students across the University, Friday, May 7th, 10:00 AM, Virtual
  • All doctoral students across the University, Friday, May 7th, 2:00 PM, Virtual

COVID Vaccines

It is serendipitous that just after COVID-19 vaccines were made available to those 16 years of age and older, the state of Michigan has informed MSU it will be providing us vaccines to administer to you – our students – starting this week.

Starting Friday, MSU will begin administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to MSU students 18 and older, regardless of immigration status or primary residence, at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. Students must select an appointment to receive a vaccine by clicking on this link here. The more individuals who receive a vaccine, the safer our campus will be for everyone this fall.

Food Assistance Program for College Students

Governor Whitmer announced that due to recent federal changes, more college students with demonstrated financial need are now temporarily eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), otherwise known in Michigan as the Food Assistance Program (FAP).

Summer 2021 Enrollment Waiver Request for Doctoral Students Trying to Graduate

MSU policy requires doctoral students to be registered in at least one credit during the semester in which the final oral examination is taken. Due to the current restrictions associated with COVID-19, students may not be able to complete their scheduled defenses. Click on this form to download a signature-ready, fillable PDF. This form should only be used for doctoral students who are unable to defend their dissertation during the Spring 2021 semester due to COVID-19 restrictions. This form must be submitted by the College of Music Graduate Studies Office. Please email the Waiver Request form and supporting documentation (justification) to musgrad@msu.edu when completed.

Before you consider a summer defense, though, you must speak with your document advisor and with your committee members and they must agree to it. Remember that most faculty are not on contract during the summer, so they are under no obligation to do a summer defense. It is possible to replace a committee member with another faculty member who is under contract for the summer. Another suggestion is to schedule your defense for the very end of the summer (week of Aug 23). As long as your defense occurs prior to the first day of fall semester, it is still considered a summer defense.

If you are an international student whose expected graduation date is extended, please make sure the program end date on your immigration document (I20 or DS2019) is not earlier than the new expected graduation date. Because OISS used an estimated program end date when they issue the initial I20, some students may be fine. Others however may need to have their program end date extended. An extension is a fairly straightforward process done by OISS, but it MUST BE DONE BEFORE the end date on your current immigration document. Trying to do an extension after the end date on the immigration document is a complicated and sometime results in the student needing to leave the US and reenter at a later date.

If you have questions, please contact the Graduate Office at musgrad@msu.edu
