Free Summer Tutoring Program in Music Theory and Aural Skills

The Music Theory Area invites and encourages College of Music students to participate in a free summer tutoring program.

Who is eligible to participate in tutoring?
Any undergraduate student who will be taking or retaking one or more of these music theory and aural skills courses during 2023-24: MUS 180, MUS 180E, MUS 181, MUS 182, MUS 183, MUS 280, MUS 281, MUS 282, MUS 283, MUS 381.

What are some reasons why you might want to sign up for tutoring?

  1. You'd like to get a head start on upcoming material to set yourself up for success next year.
  2. You'd like to fill in some gaps in your understanding of this year's material.
  3. You earned a failing grade in, or had to withdraw due to physical or mental health challenges from, a theory or aural skills course this year and would like to make sure that you succeed when you retake it.
  4. You’d like to minimize how much you forget over the summer.
  5. Any other reason: this tutoring program is here to help you learn and support your success.

Who are the tutors?
Three of our Master's students in Music Theory: Brendan McEvoy, Matthew Oakes, and Josiah Scott. There will also be an undergraduate peer tutor.

When and how will the tutoring take place?
From May 8th through August 18th, in 30-minute individual meetings weekly during whichever weeks you are available. All tutoring will take place via Zoom.

How much does it cost?
Nothing. It's free.

Do I have to commit to coming every week?
No. You'll benefit most if you set up regular appointments, but we understand that students may be unavailable some weeks during the summer.

What will we work on?
At your first meeting, you and the tutor will discuss your goals for the summer and go from there.

How do I sign up?
It's simple. Fill out this form: https://forms.gle/ugB1USanVMvEuk8f9

Please consider signing up. The tutors are skilled, caring teachers who are here to help you to learn.

Video B-roll Capture at our Facilities

To assist with the creation of future videos for the College, the Communications Office is working with an external video group to shadow student and faculty activities within our facilities and document them with high-quality videos. This work will take place on April 19, 20, 26, and 27. A variety of ensemble and instrumental rehearsals, class instruction and informal gatherings within the Billman Music will be represented. If you have any questions about this videography, please contact Michael Sundermann in the Communications Office, sunderm7@msu.edu.

National Music Student Well-being Survey

Researchers at the University of Southern California invite College of Music students to participate in the National Music Student Well-being Survey, a comprehensive questionnaire that collects information about experiences of well-being as a student.

Although performance-related injury is a well-studied topic, little is known about musician well-being and how to facilitate health and well-being in music students. This survey is an important first step towards addressing well-being needs of student musicians.  More information is included on the attached document.

You must be at least 18 years old and currently enrolled as a music student to participate. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes. If you complete the survey, you can enter a raffle to win one of five $50 gift cards.

Simply click this link to go directly to the anonymous survey:
