COVID-19 Boosters Required

To reinforce President Stanley's recent message to all students, we share that Michigan State University is expanding its COVID-19 vaccine mandate to require all students, faculty, and staff to receive a COVID-19 booster, beginning with the spring 2022 semester.

From the President's letter: "The high vaccination rate among our students, faculty and staff has been an essential component to what has been a successful fall semester. Combined with our face covering requirement, this has created a safer community for our students, faculty and staff to live, work and learn with fewer cases than the communities around us."

If you have not already received your COVID-19 booster shot, please be sure to do so as soon as possible. This will not only better protect you, our Music community, and the larger MSU community, but it will also ensure that you avoid holds or other interferences with the start of the new semester.

New SafeMSU App Available

The University recently announced that the new SafeMSU app is now available. We encourage Music students to download the app and familiarize yourself with its features. The all is available to download at the iOS App Store and at Google Play

MSU Providing Additional, On-campus Testing for SARS-CoV-2 variants, influenza and RSV in New Testing Location

With the circulation of new strains of COVID-19, increased spread of influenza and the upcoming holiday travel season, MSU Health Care is partnering with Grand Rapids-based NxGen MDx, to provide additional high-quality COVID-19 PCR testing, plus influenza and RSV testing with overnight results.

Testing is available for students, MSU community members and the general public. The new testing site is located at Spartan Stadium in Concourse B and will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a closure for lunch at 1:00-1:45 p.m. Patients can expect results by 9 a.m. the next morning.

Walk-ups are welcome and will be directed to register on-site. To make an appointment, visit NxGen scheduler, choose your date and time and check-in upon arrival.

The cost of the test at this location will be billable to insurance for those with symptoms or exposure. Patients will be asked to sign into a portal and choose the desired delivery for results via text or email. Uninsured patients are covered by the CARES ACT and will use their driver’s license number or social security number to register.

For international students who may be planning travel: In collaboration with the Office for Global Health, Safety and Security, the travel page on the university’s Together We Will website is updated to include the latest travel information Spartans should be aware of when traveling abroad. MSU continues to follow the CDC’s guidance on travel impacts.

Educational Engagement Residency

Looking for an opportunity to develop your own artist residency, work with students, or gain some experience for your resume? The Educational Engagement Residency Program seeks out students with strong performance skills to build an educational artist residency with the partnership of a community music educator. Apply as a group of two or more. All instruments welcome. Each student receives a $515 stipend for the semester, and the program is about 3-4 hours of work per week. Applications due December 16, 2021. Learn more.

COVID-19 Message from the President

While COVID-19 cases across the state and locally have steadily increased, on-campus cases have remained relatively stable. This underscores the importance of our COVID-19 health and safety directives which require masks in all indoor settings as well as our vaccination requirement – both of which will remain in place at the start of the spring semester.

Importantly, the university’s leadership team – along with the science community – is closely watching the development of the omicron variant. At this time, we are not adjusting our COVID-19 directives but the president and our medical experts are strongly encouraging all Spartans to get their boosters as soon as they are able. Visit this Together We Will page to find locations where you can receive yours.

Statement Following the Oxford High Shool Shootings

We realize that there are Spartans who are graduates of Oxford High School or have connections to that community, and often tragic and stressful events can trigger intense emotional distress for those close to the community and those who have experienced past trauma. Please know that for anyone who may be in crisis, CAPS provides remote crisis services 24/7/365. If you are in crisis and need to talk with someone, or are worried about a friend, call the CAPS Crisis Line at 517-355-8270 and press “1” when prompted to speak with a crisis counselor. You will be connected to a counselor available to assist you at no charge.

  • If you encounter wait times with this resource that are unmanageable for you, please connect with an alternative crisis resource, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-TALK) or visit their website, or the Crisis Text Line (Text HOME to 741-741 or visit the website). If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

MSU has also invested in a partnership with a service called ThrivingCampus, which is devoted to assisting MSU students in connecting with mental health professionals in their area. The ThrivingCampus website allows you to search for providers by practice area, accepted insurances, treatment approaches, race and many other potentially meaningful criteria.
