Summer positions at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp is looking for students to fill summer positions. Applications are on a rolling deadline but due as soon as possible. Blue Lake says they are especially looking for Saxophone, Strings, and Music Education sajors. Dates of employment: June 16 - August 18.

Workshop with NOW ensemble

On Wednesday, March 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30p.m., students are invited to join members of NOW Ensemble for a workshop called Thriving as a Modern Chamber Ensemble.

Do you want to make chamber music a part of your job in the future? Join NOW ensemble (an ensemble of flute, clarinet, bass, electric guitar, and piano) and learn how to build and maintain a successful modern chamber ensemble.

Discussion will include how to collaborate across genres, work with non-standard instrumentation, develop strong partnerships between composers and instrumentalists, manage the administrative work, and manage interpersonal issues. NOW has been doing this for 20 years, so interested students are encouraged to take advantage of their expertise.

Grant for Graduate Students

Independent Project funding applications are now open for graduate students. These $600 grants are meant for graduate students working towards building their brand, business, or future career through project-based work. Applications are due April 1. For more info and to get ideas of what might qualify, find details here.

César Chávez and Dolores Huerta Commemorative Celebration

Michigan State University is celebrating its 14th annual César Chávez and Dolores Huerta Commemorative Celebration on Monday, March 25th, 2024, honoring the legacies of local and national community leaders and organizers. The theme for 2024 is Cosechando Nuestros Sueños: Harvesting Our Dreams.

Workshops and events will be hosted in the afternoon between 2:30 – 4:30 PM followed by a dinner and keynote presentation at 5:00 PM at the Kellogg Center for MSU students, faculty, employees and community members. The event is free and open to the public.

This event recognizes the brave champions of our past, present and future that are making change for farmworkers and Latinx communities. The featured speaker for 2024 is Mónica Ramírez, Gender Equity Activist, Civil Rights Attorney and Founder of Justice for Migrant Women. We look forward to engaging with you around these important topics.

Generative Artificial Intelligence Use: Input Requested

MSU Provost Thomas Jeitschko is seeking broad participation, discussion and input on the issue of AI in teaching, research, and creative endeavors. In a memo addressing this issue, he indicates that he is “eager to learn more about the many and diverse uses of AI technologies at MSU” and invites individuals to fill out a brief Initial Campus AI Inventory Form on or before February 23, 2024. If you are using AI in any way, please take a moment to participate in the survey.

New Academic Advisor

The College of Music is pleased to announce the addition of a new undergraduate academic advisor. Daniel Hanrath has accepted the new position and will begin work in the College on Friday, March 1. Dan comes to our community with a BM in Music Theory/Composition from Central Michigan University and an MM in Music Theory/Composition from Wayne State University, where he is currently Academic Advisor for the Department of Music. He has been working in Student Affairs since 2018 and has advised both music and nursing students throughout his career. We are very excited for Dan to join the advising team in March.

"Dear Graduating Seniors:

Each year the College of Music invites graduating seniors to apply to be the student speaker at the College of Music spring undergraduate commencement ceremony. If you are interested in being the student speaker, please fill out the attached application form and submit the form to me at kroth@msu.edu by Friday, February 23, 2024.

Graduating seniors will have the opportunity to review all applications online and vote electronically for the applicant they would like to deliver the senior class address. The applicant with the highest number of votes will be forwarded to the College of Music Undergraduate Committee for approval. The selected speaker will have 5-7 minutes during the ceremony to present their ideas to the graduating class.

Scholarships and Grant Opportunities

Applications are now open for three International Studies & Programs scholarships and grant opportunities. The deadline is March 1st, 2024. The three awards available are:

Claffey Meyer International Travel Grant

This award provides financial assistance to domestic students who intend to travel to developing countries for the purpose of providing technical assistance, participate in research, or engage in service. Grants are intended to support travel, related living expenses, and projects costs—not to be used as a tuition scholarship.

*Open to Doctoral, Graduate, and upper-level undergraduate students
*Award amounts vary by year, but will be no less than $2,000

Dr. Charles and Marjorie Gliozzo Dissertation Research Scholarship

This scholarship is available to MSU doctoral students with dissertation research objectives who have defended, or are in the process of defending, a dissertation proposal. The scholarship supports field research abroad in support of the student's dissertation.

Walker Hill Scholarship

The Walker Hill International Award is available to MSU doctoral students to be used for pre-dissertation visits to a doctoral research site in a country outside the United States (for international students, research in one's own country does not qualify). The student must have completed adequate credits and be able to submit a description, appropriateness and feasibility of pre-dissertation research objectives to be accomplished during the period spent abroad.

Artist Management Q&A

On January 24, the Running Start program presented a panel session called The Hidden Curriculum of Artist Management. Four professional artists and managers – Casey Sherwood, Tim Mar, Margherita Fava, and Brian Major – answered questions exploring the difference between managing your own career, being “managed”, or making a part- or full-time career out of managing someone else. To help those wanting to get a clear vision of how to manage themselves, when to get representation, or whether they might want to be an artist manager in the future, the panel's answers are now collected in one simple document so everyone has access. Applications are being accepted by MSU Student Life and Engagement for more than 20 named scholarships. A total of more than $50,000 is available for undergraduate and graduate students. Application deadline is March 4. Click here for details or view the flyer for more information.

MSU Dialogues

MSU Dialogues is an intergroup dialogue program for students, faculty, and staff at Michigan State University. It is a learning experience that brings together people across different identity groups over a sustained period to:

Understand our commonalities and differences
Increase personal awareness and impact of our identities
Examine the nature and impact of societal inequalities
Explore ways of working together toward greater equity and justice for all
Prepare individuals to live, work, and lead in a complex, diverse society

Conversations on Antisemitism and Islamophobia Spring Series is open to MSU students, faculty, and staff. The first gathering took place earlier this week, but three more opportunities to participate remain: February 15 and 20, and March 5. The group meets in-person from 5:15-7:15 p.m. in Case Hall.

Maintenance Form

MSU College of Music now has a maintenance form! If you notice a problem with the facilities, whether it’s a light fixture that’s broken, or a water fountain that doesn’t work, please report it to the maintenance form. You will QR codes posted in practice spaces so you can easily access the form. If you’d like to see the QR code posted in additional locations, please email Chuck Roberts with your recommendation.
