MSU's Know More Campus Survey: A note to students from Dean James Forger

Dear College of Music Students,

I am writing to encourage you to take part in the recently released Know More Campus Survey because each one of us in the College of Music has important perspectives and experiences to contribute to our understanding of MSU’s culture.

Over the past several years, we have made a joint commitment and worked collaboratively toward a campus culture free from discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, and relationship violence. It is through this commitment that MSU has launched the second iteration of this survey to garner input from students, faculty, and staff on the university’s current relationship with violence and sexual misconduct policies, procedures, resources, and services.

Every student should have received an email from KnowMore.MSU@RTI.org with a unique access code to complete the survey. The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete and is completely confidential.

The Know More Campus Survey was designed by the Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct Expert Advisory workgroup to measure the culture, perceptions and policies associated with relationship violence and sexual misconduct among undergraduate students, graduate/professional students, faculty, and staff on campus. The first iteration of this survey was launched in 2019 and the data gathered was used to inform the RVSM Strategic Plan

If you have already taken the survey, thank you for doing your part to support change at MSU. You can continue your support by encouraging other students to take part in this critical study.

For more information and frequently asked questions, please visit supportmore.msu.edu/know-more.

Sincerely,

James Forger
Dean

MSU’s modified mask requirements

Health and Wellness survey

The College of Music has put together a faculty/staff committee to develop new health and wellness strategies, services, and programs for College of Music students. Student input is essential to help us understand concerns around health and wellness, current use of resources, and help us prioritize new programs and services.

Please take the MSU Music Health and Wellness survey by Thursday, March 24 to help shape our health and wellness strategy for the College of Music.

The survey should take 7-10 minutes to complete, and participants can choose to enter to win one of ten $25 Amazon gift cards.

Funding for Grad Student Independent Projects

Running Start has independent project funding to award to students for professional development and entrepreneurial projects this summer. Funding can be used to build your brand, business, or future career through project-based work. $500 awards will be given to accepted projects and awarded by April 29. Ideas could include: launching your personal website, creating a recital series or tour, commissioning a new work, creating a music video to improve your YouTube presence, learning a new skill like coding or analysis, getting Suzuki or Dalcroze certification, arranging a work for new instrumentation, and more.

Applications are due 4/11 and more information and instructions are available here.

MSU’s modified mask requirements

As you likely know, President Stanley has announced a revision of the MSU face covering policies on campus. These modifications are taken based on the lowered virus health risks due to a very high campus vaccination rate (94%+) and the significant drop of Michigan and Ingham County COVID cases.

Effective March 6, the following are settings where masks are NOT required:

  • Most indoor settings on campus
  • 1:1 instruction
  • In concerts, recitals, or athletic events
  • Office settings

This means that masks ARE still required in the following situations:

  • During classes and rehearsals (per our current policy)
  • On public transportation and in health care locations

NOTE: Masks and proof of vaccine verification are no longer required to attend concerts or athletic events.

For those who elect to wear masks in settings where they are not required, research is showing that one-way masking with well-fitting and high-quality respirators or 5-layer masks (N95s, KN95s, and KF94s) provide a good measure of protection for the wearer against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Please respect the individual decisions by faculty, students, and staff who prefer to continue wearing a mask even where it is no longer required.
