Music health and wellness survey

Yearly student input is essential to help our College of Music Health and Wellness faculty/staff committee understand student concerns around health and wellness, current use of resources, and help us prioritize new programs and services.

Take the MSU Music Health and Wellness survey to provide feedback on health and wellness resources within the College. Your opinions help us shape the next year of programming and resources!

Research participation opportunity

The College has been contacted by an Ohio State University researcher requesting that we share the following opportunity with MSU Music students. The research is related to the practicing of music, and the hope is that participation in the study can help improve practice. The researcher shares the following:

Dear Music Student,

My name is Dr. Jeff Barbee (Ohio State University) and my research colleague is Dr. Nancy Summitt (Central Michigan University). We would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in a research study investigating the relationship between diverse practice strategies and improved music performance outcomes. We believe this study can potentially benefit your musical performance achievement with minimum time commitment.

The study will last approximately six weeks and require about an hour of your time in total. You will be asked to complete a pre-test questionnaire when you sign up for the study. Over the course of the next four weeks, you will receive a brief informational video and resources about a specific topic related to effective musical practice every week.  You will then be asked to complete a post-test questionnaire after receiving these materials. The first video of the series will also contain pertinent documents for the rest of the study.

If you would like to improve your practice and participate in the study, please click on the link below and register by 10 p.m. EST on Monday, March 20th. If you have any questions regarding this study, please feel free to reach out to me - my contact information is below. Happy practicing!

A Unique Volunteer Opportunity

A College of Music alumna and teaching artist Amy Dennison is planning to host a workshop during Grandparents University, an intergenerational, on-campus experience this summer. She is looking for a few volunteers to assist with the workshop and thought it might be of interest to current Music students looking for unique opportunities. If you would like more information, contact Music staff member Katie Bethel at bethelka@msu.edu.

Removal of Memorial Items

As you may have noticed, the flowers, signs, and other items that have been left in memoriam at campus landmarks including the Rock, Spartan Statue, the MSU Union, and Berkey Hall began to be collected and processed this Thursday, March 2, in advance of spring break. Volunteers separated the flowers from their plastic sleeves and collected materials at each of these sites. The flowers will be preserved and turned into mulch, which will then be included in the planting of a memorial tree later this year. Signs and other memorial items will be preserved by MSU Archives and the MSU Museum.

Wharton Center

As our Spartan community continues to come together to support one another, Wharton Center for Performing Arts is pleased to offer free tickets to MSU undergraduate, graduate, and professional students for several performances this spring semester, including The Boy Who Grew Flowers, Imani Winds, The Okee Dokee Brothers, Cyrille Aimée, New York Philharmonic String Quartet, Cross That River, and National Geographic Live: View from Above with NASA Astronaut Terry Virts.

For undergraduates: To receive your tickets, visit whartoncenter.com/msu-students. There is a 2-ticket limit per event; mobile ticket delivery.

For graduate and professional students: Graduate and professional students can come in person to the Wharton Center ticket office with their MSU ID to take advantage of this offer. There is a 2-ticket limit per event.

MSU Lifts COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

MSU announced this week that as the pandemic continues to shift from an acute public health crisis to a personal health responsibility, the university no longer will require the COVID-19 vaccination for students, staff and faculty, effective immediately. There still may be limited situations in which professional students and employees must be vaccinated due to the requirements of the hospitals and health care facilities where they work and study.

As does the CDC, MSU health experts strongly encourage all members of the MSU community to stay up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations and all other vaccinations. For more information about MSU’s COVID-19 response, information on how to get a vaccination and frequently asked questions, please visit Together We Will.
