Classical trumpeter and in-demand soloist Mary Elizabeth Bowden will host coffee chats with individuals or groups on Friday, November 3 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Sign up via Handshake to learn a little from this successful musician! 

On the same day, MSU Music students can attend Building an Entrepreneurial Mindset: Q&A with Endea Owens. Endea is an MSU alum and plays bass in the house band for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. But that is not all! She performs and networks and runs a non-profit and...and...the list goes on. Visit with her from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in MPB 103 on Friday, November 3.

Two great opportunities for all students to learn from two succesfull entrepreneurs!

Water fountain maintenance and repair

The week of October 9, MSU facilities staff were onsite at the College of Music to address water fountain functioning and issues. 2 water fountains have been replaced, and flow on bottle filling stations and fountains have been adjusted. There are still several fountains that will have ongoing maintenance for the next few weeks as repairs are completed. Thank you for your patience as we work to restore the functioning of all the water fountains! Please note that occasionally water fountains in the Music Building may display discolored water. This is a phenomenon that is campus-wide on select days, and does not affect water fountains in Billman or Music Practice.

Physical Therapy and Performance Advice Sessions

Sign up for a FREE 15-minute advice session with a physical therapist or health professional! This is an opportunity for you to address any tightness, stress, or pain you have when performing (or after a long day of performing). You can also use this time to learn more about how to PREVENT injuries from occurring and optimize your performing. Please note: this is an opportunity to talk to a professional, but this is not substitution for treatment for an acute injury. Marching Band and Music majors and minors are all welcome!

Dissertation Completion Award Fall Deadline

Award: $10,000 stipend!
The application deadline for fall 2023 Dissertation Completion awards is October 27. Applicants must be a doctoral student in the FINAL stages of writing a dissertation, document, composition, or final lecture recital. Applicants must also register for at least one credit during the semester in which they accept the award and must demonstrate in the application materials their ability to complete the degree within one (1) calendar year of the application date. If you are in crisis, PLEASE reach out to someone on the faculty or staff. Or contact CAPS, which offers a variety of services to help you cope with these challenging times. 

  • Students needing crisis services can access the MSU CAPS crisis phone line by calling (517) 355-8270 and selecting prompt 1. This service is available to MSU students 24/7/365. 
  • Students interested in accessing CAPS for mental health services can start the process by completing the form found here. 
  • CAPS will continue to offer a robust group counseling program. Updated information about the available groups as well as how to get connected to a group, can be found here.

Local Recording and Live Streaming in Billman Venues

Recording and On Demand Live-Streaming is now possible in Murray Hall, using the tech cart.

Recording using the tech cart in Large Rehearsal Hall and Eichler Hall is also now possible.

Each form of recording will use whatever camera view is visible on the tech cart display monitors and will use the microphones in the rooms.  

For instructions on how to use this recording and livestreaming technology, please see the attached instruction guide. These guides will also be posted on the tech carts. Instructions on how to adjust the camera views can also be found on quick-start guides within the rooms.

If you would like to receive training on the spaces or have questions about the capabilities, please contact Justin Baker. 

You are still welcome to check out Zoom H8N recorders/cameras from the main office if you would prefer to record using those devices.

Occasionally, the Dean's of the College of Music will say, "lunch is on us," and welcome the entire Music community. This month, October 12 will be one of those days! Stop by the lobby of the Billman Music Pavilion any time from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday 10/12 to eat, hang out with students, faculty, deans, and staff, and add to the community spirit! 

Take part in the first Fox Trot

Time to get out, take a short break, walk and talk, and learn a little more about the people in your Music community. Led by Dr. Derrick Fox, your associate dean for graduate studies and creative endeavors, anyone who gathers will walk a lap together around part of West Circle Drive. There is no agenda. It's just a time to get to know people. Dr. Fox will be leading this walk on Wednesday, October 11 at 11:50 a.m., weather permitting. Students can meet him at his office, 102 Music Building, and head out from there. Join the fun if you can, and give yourself a well-deserved respite during the day!
