Alumna Receives Director Position in Texas

Mary Ellen Poole to take the helm at Butler School of Music in Fall 2014.

As dean of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Poole has recently been appointed director of the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin.

She previously was at the School of Music at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., where she held positions including director, associate professor, assistant professor, coordinator of music history, and instructor of music history and flute.

“My work has taken me to all kinds of institutions, from a small comprehensive university to a freestanding big city conservatory,” says Poole, “and now to a major research university. I feel incredibly fortunate in what I've learned from my previous students and colleagues, and to have the opportunity for this new adventure at the Butler School. And I'm thrilled to be back in the rich cultural and intellectual mix of a college of fine arts.”

A native of Louisiana, she earned her bachelor’s degree in flute performance from Baylor University, a master’s degree in flute performance from Michigan State University (1983), and a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
