Female musicians honor legacy of early music

Guest quartet performs works of 17th and 18th century female composers and musicians.

Taylor Johnston Early Music Series hosts the four women of Infusion Baroque as they perform “Virtuosa." Enjoy this early music series concert on February 20th at Fairchild Theatre.

The captivating collective of the four musicians of Infusion Baroque revive the works of historied compositions, seamlessly blending music and theatrics to the tunes of Ana Bon, Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre and others. MSU College of Music concludes the 2023-2024 Taylor Johnston Early Music Series with this third concert of the season. Now in its eighth year, the annual series presents concerts of historically informed music that are unique to mid-Michigan venues.

Infusion Baroque presentes their program Virtuosa on Tuesday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Fairchild Theatre of the MSU Auditorium. Members Alexa Raine-Wright, Sallynee Amawat, Andrea Stewart and Rona Nadler, celebrate the talent and prowess of women composers from the 17th and 18th centuries. Combined with theatrical elements, the performance will present a masterful combination of entertaining sounds and experience.

As their work pays homage to the female musicians before them, the quartet's artistry underscores the importance of women’s contributions to the history and tradition of composition and performance. Played with baroque flute, recorder, violin, cello and harpsichord, Infusion Baroque’s Virtuosa is joy not to be missed.

The entire series is generously sponsored by the Taylor Johnston Early Music Series Endowment established by Taylor Johnston. Dr. Johnston had been an MSU professor for 51 years and passed away in 2019. His long-time passion for music, particularly early music, led him to establish the annual series.

Reserved seating tickets for this and other performances in the series are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors (age 60 and older), and $7 for students with ID and anyone under 18, and can be purchased online (music.msu.edu), by calling (517) 353-5340, or at the door. More information about the Taylor Johnston Early Music Series and other events can be found at music.msu.edu/events.
