MSU continues MSUFCU Jazz Artist in Residence program with Jon Faddis Dec. 5-9

Thanks to the $1 million gift from the MSU Federal Credit Union, the MSU College of Music welcomes its second international jazz artist to Michigan Dec. 5-9, 2013. Jazz trumpeter, composer, educator, and conductor Jon Faddis will hold a residency where he will teach MSU jazz students, present master classes, and perform. He will also work with students across the state, including high school jazz musicians in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo and elementary students in East Lansing.

Born in California, Faddis began playing the trumpet at age eight and joined Lionel Hampton’s band at age 18 before joining the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra as lead trumpet. By his early twenties, Faddis had become a notable musician in New York City, performing with Charles Mingus. Often likened to Dizzy Gillespie in style and sound, Faddis, performs and teaches around the U.S. and the world. Download high-res photo of Faddis HERE.

Faddis will perform with Jazz Orchestra I (directed by Rodney Whitaker) at the newly renovated Fairchild Theatre in the MSU Auditorium on Friday, Dec. 6, 8 p.m.
The concert, “Nutcracker Swings and More,” will also feature the music of Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie.

General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and are available from the College of Music box office — in person at the Music Building, Room 102, 333 W. Circle Drive or over the phone at (517) 353-5340 — online at music.msu.edu, or at the door one hour before the show. Admission is free to students with ID and those under 18 years of age.

Drummer Jeff Hamilton, the third jazz artist in residence, is slated to hold a residency at MSU April 7-12, 2014.
