Spectacular season finales by major large ensembles

College orchestras, choirs and bands fill Wharton Center stage with inspirational performances.

Fans of large musical ensembles will want to clear their evening calendars the last week of April as the MSU College of Music presents a full slate of season finales in the Cobb Great Hall of the Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Major ensembles closing out the 2022-2023 Encore! Season include the MSU Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, Symphony Orchestra with Choirs, and Concert and Campus Bands.

Among the anticipated large ensemble events is a performance of inspiring works by the MSU Wind Symphony on Thursday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m., conducted by Kevin L. Sedatole. The program features guest composer Adam Schoenberg’s Losing Earth and Aaron Copeland’s Appalachian Spring with solo percussion performances by MSU percussionist Jon Weber.

The MSU Symphony Orchestra shares the stage with Choral Union, State Singers, and University Choral for a spectacular event on Saturday, April 29 at 8 p.m., conducted by Octavio Más-Arocas and David Rayl in his final conducting performance for MSU. The program “A Celebration of Legacies” includes Symbolum Nicenum from Mass in B Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, Daphnis et Chloé (Suite No. 2) by Maurice Ravel, Missa brevis K. 192 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and selections from A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms.

General admission seating for this and other large ensemble performances are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (age 60 and older), and free for students and those under 18 with valid ID, and can be purchased online (music.msu.edu), by calling (517) 353-5340, or at the door.
