Music for Motown Kids

Join the crowdpower campaign to support MSU Community Music School-Detroit.

Music for Motown Kids strives to bring affordable music education to Detroit's youth. Music is a proven teaching tool for boosting student achievement. Our school culture at the MSU Community Music School-Detroit engages youth and whole families in learning music and teaches skills such as dedication, teamwork, creativity, problem-solving and abstract thinking. Our faculty is caring and dedicated to mentoring Detroit's musical legacy with the next generation.

The Aspiring Musicians Program (AMP) offers beginning and intermediate instrumental music lessons to Detroit youth ages 9 through 17 in small group classes on brass, winds, strings, percussion, piano and guitar. Although our subsidized lessons average $5 per week, many of our families still need financial aid in order to participate. Our formula for providing tuition assistance is based on Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Detroit's median household income in the most recent U.S. Census was $26,955. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 57.3% of all Detroit children, ages 0-17, live below the poverty level.

We Need Your Support

We hope to raise $10,000 to help provide tuition assistance for students and to help keep our lesson costs as affordable as possible at $5 per week (average) for children. Help us make Music for Motown Kids a reality.

Craig Murray, BA '76 MSU Advertising, of Burbank California, and charter member of the MSU College of Music's National Leadership Council, will match your gift up to $5,000. Craig is inspired by the work CMS-D faculty and mentors are doing to bring music and music therapy services to the community.
