Cello Plus Chamber Music Festival

The 15th Annual Stanley and Selma Hollander Cello Plus Chamber Music Festival, which runs April 6-12, the College presents a variety of popular works performed by acclaimed faculty artists and internationally renowned guests. Suren Bagratuni is the artistic director.

4/6 Monday, 7:30 p.m., Fairchild Theatre, MSU Auditorium
Schubert and Dvořák (concert 1)
Prize-winning pianist Boris Slutsky from the Peabody Institute, joins faculty artists Suren Bagratuni, cello, Dmitri Berlinsky, violin, and Yuri Gandelsman, viola, for this concert.

4/8 Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., Fairchild Theatre, MSU Auditorium
French Connection (Gabriel Fauré) (concert 2)
Guest artists include Ruggero Allifranchini, violin, and Hsin-Yun Huang, viola, with faculty artists Deborah Moriarty, piano, Ralph Votapek, piano, and Suren Bagratuni, cello.

4/10 Friday, 8:00 p.m., Fairchild Theatre, MSU Auditorium
Bach Plus (concert 3)
Cello Plus’s annual tribute to one of the greatest composers of all time — Johann Sebastian Bach, features Ruggero Allifranchini, violin, Stephen Prutsman, piano, Hsin-Yun Huang, viola, chamber groups, and the University Chorale.

4/12 Sunday, 3:00 p.m., Fairchild Theatre, MSU Auditorium
The Silent Movie, 2015 (concert 4)
Pianist/composer Stephen Prutsman takes Cello Plus to the movies with a multimedia event featuring a silent film with piano and strings. Also performing: Randolph Kelly, viola, Ruggero Allifranchini, violin, and Suren Bagratuni, cello, with works by Dvořák.

Jazz Spectacular

The 35th Annual Jazz Spectacular runs from April 16-18 and includes three swinging days of exceptional jazz performances, swing dancing, and jazz competitions. Performances include the MSU Professors of Jazz, special guests Bobby Carcassés, Afro-Cuban jazz musician, Roberto Carcassés, Cuban-jazz pianist, and several well-known jazz clinicians.

4/16 Thursday, 7:30 p.m., Fairchild Theatre, MSU Auditorium
Jazz Octets
Four jazz groups jam for the kick off-concert blending the sounds of big band with small-group performances. Instrumentation includes bass, drums, piano, baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. 

4/17 Friday, 8:00 p.m., MSU Demonstration Hall Ballroom
Swing Dance, Jazz Orchestras
Also part of Latin IS America. Get ready to dance all night and learn new moves on the dance floor. Guests Bobby and Roberto Carcassés will offer a Latin-tinge to this annual, well-attended swing dance. 

4/18 Saturday, 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., MSU Union Main Lounge
Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition
A full day of jazz! Ten to 20 top jazz bands from high schools around the state and surrounding areas come to MSU for an all-day regional competition, with workshops, master classes, ensemble performances, and clinics. 

4/18 Saturday, 8:00 p.m., Fairchild Theatre, MSU Auditorium
Jazz Spectacular Wrap-up Concert
Jazz Orchestra I (BeBop Spartans), directed by Rodney Whitaker, will be joined by well-known guest clinicians, MSU Professors of Jazz, and special guests Bobby and Roberto Carcassés and the top winning high school jazz band of the day.

Latin IS America Festival

The Third Annual Latin IS America Festival celebrates the blending of Latin American and U.S. cultures by showcasing artistic and scholarly works that dissolve boundaries and establish fresh connections. The 2015 festival includes lectures, workshops, a swing dance, and concerts.

Women’s Chamber Ensemble and Women’s Glee Club
An exploration of music of the Americas. Sandra Snow, conductor.

Edmar Castaneda Trio
A virtuoso folk harpist hailing from Bogatá, Colombia, Edmar Castaneda leads his one-of-a-kind trio, featuring Marshall Gilkes on trombone and David Sillman on drums, and creates an exciting and unique sound that has engaged audiences and received critical acclaim around the world! 

4/27 Monday, 7:30 p.m., Fairchild Theatre, MSU Auditorium
Musique 21 
A “Theatre of Music” production based in part upon the poetry of Frederico García Lorca, this concert will include poems in Spanish and English about the nature of the ancient lineage of family connection. Kevin Noe, director. 

5/2 Saturday, 8:00 p.m., Cobb Great Hall, Wharton Center
Choral Union, University Chorale, State Singers, and Symphony Orchestra
A program that includes the earliest work published in Latin America, a mass from colonial Cuba, works by early 20th-century Brazilian composers, and a work by Aaron Copland, who was a great champion of Latin American works and composers. ​David Rayl, conductor.
