Instruments
INVENTORY INSTRUMENT USE POLICY
Instruments are available for loan to students enrolled in College of Music courses. Students are eligible to receive an instrument loan if they:
- Need the instrument for a College of Music class, ensemble, or MSU sanctioned event
- Have no outstanding fees or loans from the Instrument Inventory
- Fill out the Borrower’s Request Form
- Have proper Professor Approval (if required)
- All instruments are due each semester by the Friday before Final Exams at 5pm, unless a different date is agreed upon with the Inventory Manager. Any instrument not returned by the deadline will incur non-refundable late fees per the following schedule until it is returned:
- $50 fee, assessed the next business day after the instrument was due
- $100 fee, assessed on the first business day of each month
- If the instrument is not returned by the last day of the following semester, the student will be billed the entire cost of the instrument
- Loans over the summer incur a $50 fee unless it is their major instrument, and they have approval from their major professor. Summer loans are due two weeks before the fall semester begins.
- Students must coordinate with the Instrument Inventory Manager (MUSIC.Inventory@msu.edu) to check instruments in/out. They may pick up and drop off instruments at either the Main Office (MB-102) or the Music Inventory Office (MB-016) during their respective office hours. All instrument loans are subject to instrument availability, and priority is given to students enrolled as a Music Major. Please note that instrument requests may take up to 2 business days to process.
- During use, students are responsible for:
- Reporting any damage or wear
- Being reachable should an immediate return be necessary
- Sharing any instrument in high demand
- Following instructions given by the inventory manager as they pertain to instruments in shared lockers
- Inventory Instrument Use policies may change at any time without prior notification. All problems may be taken to Professor Michael Kroth (Kroth@music.msu.edu), associate dean.
Instrument Studio Representatives
- Each instrument studio must provide one representative as the “Instrument Specialist” to be available to the Instrument Inventory management.
- Instruments split between multiple studios should arrange for one joint representative.

- Time periods for the “condition inspections”:
- During the two (2) weeks leading up to the start of Fall Semester classes
- During Fall Finals Week or during the one (1) week immediately after the Spring Semester
- During Spring Finals Week or during the one (1) week immediately after the Spring Semester
