“A Sea of Talent” with the MSU Symphony Orchestra

The Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra, led by maestro Octavio Más-Arocas, presents A Sea of Talent on Sunday, October 24, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. in the Wharton Center’s Cobb Great Hall. This concert highlights a stunning blend of instrumental artistry, featuring eight esteemed MSU artist-faculty soloists and a captivating work by guest composer Viet Cuong.

The centerpiece of the program is La Mer by Claude Debussy, a vibrant and evocative musical depiction of the sea the work is a vivid, impressionistic portrayal of the sea’s ever-changing moods, capturing its power, mystery, and beauty. Through lush orchestration and fluid melodies, the piece transports listeners to the shifting tides and shimmering waves of the ocean.

“Our orchestra has been working tirelessly to bring this extraordinary program to life,” said Más-Arocas, MSU’s Director of Orchestras and a conductor on the program. “This dynamic range of works offers something truly special for our audience, and we’re thrilled to display the remarkable combinations and talents of our musicians here at MSU.”

Guest composer Viet Cuong presents Moxie (2018), a transformative piece that explores bold energy through delicate gestures, proving that simplicity can be strikingly dynamic. The program also includes Frank Martin’s Concerto for Seven Wind Instruments, Timpani, Percussion, and String Orchestra. Composed in 1949, this work is celebrated for its unique combination of soloists and its innovative blend of neoclassical form with modern harmonies. Soloists performing the concerto from the MSU College of Music include Richard Sherman, flute; Nermis Mieses, oboe; Guy Yehuda, clarinet; Michael Kroth, bassoon; Corbin Wagner, horn; Justin Emerich, trumpet; Kenneth Thompkins, trombone; and Gwendolyn Dease, timpani. Adding to the program is a student-composed fanfare, further showcasing the creative talent within the university.

General admission seating for large and other ensemble performances are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (age 60 and older), and free for students and those under 18 with valid ID.
