The Michigan State University College of Music is delighted to welcome distinguished jazz pianist, composer, and educator Rick Roe as the final featured artist in this season’s MSU Federal Credit Union Jazz Artist in Residence program. Now in its 12th year, the residency program brings world-renowned jazz musicians to MSU and communities across Michigan for an inspiring blend of concerts, workshops, and mentorship. Roe’s residency runs from February 11–14, 2025, offering MSU students and aspiring young musicians a rare opportunity to learn from one of the genre’s finest.
Celebrated for his refined technique and deep connection to jazz tradition, Roe has built a remarkable career as both a performer and educator. His lyrical improvisations and intricate harmonies have earned him acclaim, along with collaborations with jazz greats such as Donald Byrd, Wynton Marsalis, and Regina Carter. Winner of the 1994 Great American Jazz Piano Competition and a two-time semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, Roe continues to inspire audiences with his artistry and versatility.

As part of his residency, Roe will perform with the MSU Jazz Nonets on Friday, February 14, at 8 p.m. in Murray Hall of the Music Building.
“Rick Roe’s depth of knowledge and dedication to the jazz tradition make him an exceptional artist and educator,” said Xavier Davis, Professor of Jazz Piano at MSU. “Our students and community are incredibly fortunate to learn from someone whose experience, artistry, and passion for teaching continue to inspire the next generation of jazz musicians.”
Roe’s residency is part of a dynamic season that also included residencies by trombonist Ryan Keberle, who opened the series in October, and bassist John Clayton, who completed his residency in December. During his weeklong visit, Roe will mentor students in the MSU Jazz Studies program, tour select stops across Michigan and perform with MSU’s Jazz Nonets—continuing the program’s mission to inspire the next generation of jazz musicians.
Reserved seating tickets for Rick Roe’s public performance with the MSU Jazz Nonets are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors (age 60 and older), and $7 for students and individuals under 18. Tickets are available online at music.msu.edu, by calling (517) 353-5340, or at the door.
This artist residency is made possible through the generous support of the MSU Federal Credit Union, with additional concert sponsorship provided by the Jenny Chung and Family for Human Rights Fund.
Established in 2013 with a $1 million endowment from MSU Federal Credit Union, the MSUFCU Jazz Artist in Residence program represents the largest single investment in the College of Music’s jazz program. Each year, the program hosts multiple leading jazz artists, who collaborate with students in rehearsals, masterclasses, and performances while traveling with MSU jazz ensembles to schools and nonprofit organizations across the state.
