The Concert Orchestra presents a program centered on Margaret Bonds’ Montgomery Variations and Ottorino Respighi’s Belkis, Regina di Saba. Inspired by Bonds’ visit to Montgomery, Alabama, and the social justice movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Montgomery Variations draws on spirituals to shape a series of expressive orchestral movements reflecting resilience and transformation. Respighi’s Belkis, Regina di Saba, a richly orchestrated suite from his 1931 ballet, brings to life the legendary encounter of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon through vivid musical storytelling. Also on the program is Philharmonic Fanfare by Gina Gillie, offering a contemporary complement to the evening’s repertoire. Conducted by Katherine Kilburn, joined by conductors Zongheng Zhang and Dan Jaggars.
