A wide variety of performance opportunities await our students each year, with orchestras, bands, choirs and opera, jazz nonets and combos, small ensembles, and more.
A variety of programs and initiatives operate continuously or annually to enhance learning experiences and help students prepare for their future in music.
The MSU College of Music supports and challenges students, values innovation and creativity, and helps every community member achieve professional excellence.
Below you will find commonly asked questions by graduate students as they come to and begin their studies at the College of Music.
On the Graduate side: Students can enroll in most classes by themselves using the ‘Schedule Builder’ tab inside the Schedule of Courses . Some classes ALWAYS require an override before enrolling – 400-level courses, 85x Applied Lessons, MUS 896-899 and MUS 996-999. Override requests are sent through Anne Simon (musgrad@msu.edu) and are usually entered the same day. When courses are full, students can write to Anne Simon and request being added to the Waiting List.
On the Graduate side: Students MUST apply to graduate through the Registrar’s Office website. Students completing all of the requirements for a degree, who do not apply, will not graduate.
Students can find the forms outside the Graduate Studies Office on online at https://www.reg.msu.edu/read/pdf/indestudyapp.pdf.
Students should first consult with the professor when they have an issue. If that does not solve the issue, they can make an appointment to speak with either of the Associate Deans, through their secretaries.
Students can speak with the Undergraduate or Graduate Secretaries for assistance. If neither are available or they do not know how to assist, students can contact the Student Billing Office at 140 Hannah Administration Building or call them at 517-355-5050.
Students should first contact the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) to see if they can assist. They are in 102 International Center or can be reached via e-mail at oiss@msu.edu. IF OISS needs additional information from the College of Music, they should contact one of the Associate Deans.
Overrides – Students can complete/submit a green override form to either Anne Simon (graduate students) or Rita Martin (undergraduate students). Forms are available at both of their offices. Graduate students can also send an e-mail to musgrad@msu.edu and include the same information as they would have with the green form.
Advising – For graduate advising, email musgrad@msu.edu to set up an appointment.
Students should first contact the Office of Financial Aid to see if they can explain the situation. They are in Rm 252 Student Services Building or can be reached via e-mail at http://www.finaid.msu.edu/contact.asp.
Graduate students who are invited to perform or present, or, have a research locale for their final projects, can receive Fellowship monies through the Graduate Studies Office and the Graduate School. Forms and directions are at
