Music Minor

The Minor in Music, which is administered by the College of Music, will provide students an understanding of the fundamental concepts of music.

This minor is available as an elective to students who are enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs at Michigan State University other than the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music and the Bachelor of Music Degree in Composition, the Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies, the Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education, and the Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Performance. With the approval of the department and college that administer the student’s degree program, the courses that are used to satisfy the minor may also be used to satisfy the requirements for the bachelor’s degree. At least 12 unique credits counted towards the requirements for a student’s minor must not be used to fulfill the requirements for that student’s major.

The minor in music requires an audition. Admission is competitive. The College of Music accepts applications for the Minor in Music for Spring semester entrance and from current Michigan State University students only.

Current MSU student

Only current MSU students can apply for the music minor to begin in a spring semester; no fall admissions consideration.

Submit this supplemental application for admission consideration. There is a $30 nonrefundable application fee.  Deadline is Oct 1.

Personal Statement

In your personal statement please describe your educational and musical background, goals and objectives, and future career plans. Please feel free to include any information that you feel would be helpful to the College of Music in making our admission decision. Limit your statement to 300-500 words.  Deadline is Oct 1 or at least two weeks before yur scheduled audition.

Letters of Recommendation

Request letters of recommendation from two individuals familiar with your musical abilities. Deadline is Oct 1 or at least two weeks before yur scheduled audition.
