The MSU Wind Symphony joins forces with more than 200 singers from MSU’s Choral Union, State Singers, and University Chorale for a large-scale concert featuring the music of acclaimed composer and conductor Jake Runestad. Known for his energetic, inspiring, and socially resonant works, Runestad presents Proud Music of the Storm, A Silence Haunts Me, and Vincent’s Sky, merging the expressive power of wind ensemble with the unifying harmony of human voices.
The concert opens with the MSU Wind Symphony performing DUENDE: Four Preludes for Symphonic Wind Ensemble by Spanish composer Luis Serrano Alarcón. Inspired by flamenco and vernacular dance traditions, the work balances the vitality of percussive traditions with the vivid color and brilliance of woodwinds and brass.
A centerpiece of the evening, Vincent’s Sky draws inspiration from the life and vision of Vincent van Gogh through the poetry of Walt Whitman. The performance is paired with projected images of van Gogh’s paintings, bringing together music, text, and visual art in an immersive concert experience. Kevin L. Sedatole, Derrick Fox, and Michael Parker, conductors.
