About the Artist
Musekiwa Chingodza is an internationally renowned musician from Zimbabwe who specializes in playing the mbira dzavadzimu (mbira of the ancestors) the nyunga nyunga (karimba), and other Shona music traditions. He was born into a family of great mbira players (gwenyambira) in Mwangara village in the township of Murewa and began playing the instrument at the age of five. The mbira is used during bira (spirit possession) ceremonies, and Musekiwa is in high demand to play on these occasions due to his revered musicianship. He is well-known not only for playing the mbira and the nyunga nyunga, but also as a member of the Afro-pop band Panjea, and as a singer, dancer, and drummer. Currently based in Harare, Musekiwa regularly tours as a soloist giving masterclasses and concerts throughout the United States, Japan, and France.
