A wide variety of performance opportunities await our students each year, with orchestras, bands, choirs and opera, jazz nonets and combos, small ensembles, and more.
A variety of programs and initiatives operate continuously or annually to enhance learning experiences and help students prepare for their future in music.
The MSU College of Music supports and challenges students, values innovation and creativity, and helps every community member achieve professional excellence.
Dr. Douglas Campbell is Professor Emeritus of Music (Horn). He taught at MSU for 45 years from 1946 to 1991 and worked as Horn Instructor at Interlochen Arts Camp for 25 years. He was a significant influence on many developing hornists. His students won orchestral positions in the symphonies of Beijing, Calgary, Houston, Kansas City, the New York Philharmonic, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. His students also earned college teaching positions at universities across the United States.
Dr. Campbell has been a member of the National Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony Orchestra, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, and the Santa Fe Symphony. He is also a recipient of the Punto Award from the International Horn Society which is given annually “for major contributions at the regional or national level to the art of horn playing.”
From 1970-1983, Dr. Campbell hosted the annual “Horn Fandango” in Michigan, a convention for horn players in the Midwest and the first regional horn convention in the country. This, in addition to hosting the 10th annual International Horn Symposium at MSU in 1978, made Dr. Campbell a pioneer in horn circles. His regional workshop model has become an important staple within the International Horn Society in the United States.
