The MSU College of Music welcomes the acclaimed ensemble L’Invenzione for a program titled In the Shadow of Vesuvius on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. in Fairchild Theatre of the MSU Auditorium. The concert opens the 2025–26 Taylor Johnston Early Music Series, now in its tenth year, which continues to present historically informed performances and unique programs to mid-Michigan audiences.
L’Invenzione is known for its artistry and scholarship in exploring repertoire that blends rich history with expressive performance. With In the Shadow of Vesuvius, the ensemble highlights the vibrant music culture of Naples in the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting both the grandeur of the Baroque and the distinct regional character of southern Italy. The program offers audiences a rare chance to experience works deeply rooted in place, history, and cultural tradition.
The Taylor Johnston Early Music Series continues to bring exemplary guest artists recognized for their historically informed performances. Each ensemble offers audiences a rare glimpse into history by performing on instruments of their period and exploring repertoire tied to the cultural settings of the time. With In the Shadow of Vesuvius, L’Invenzione invites listeners into the vibrant sound world of Baroque Naples, where music flourished amid history and rich tradition.
Other upcoming concerts in the series include the ensemble Ruckus with flutist Emi Ferguson (October 28, 2025), a reimagination of Bach’s music in Fly the Coop, a uniquely playful program blending baroque instruments with bold arrangements, and Dark Horse Consort, presenting The Sounds of St. Mark’s (January 13, 2026), celebrating brass traditions of the late Renaissance and early Baroque, this concert evokes the splendor and innovation of sacred music-making in churches of the time.
The series is generously supported by the Taylor Johnston Early Music Series Endowment, established by the late Taylor Johnston, a longtime MSU professor whose passion for early music led to this enduring legacy.
