The acclaimed early music ensemble Les Délices from Cleveland, Ohio, will present a captivating program as they offer insights into the intersection of culture, history, and social change in 18th-century London. The MSU College of Music proudly kicks off the 2024-2025 Taylor Johnston Early Music Series, now in its ninth year, which has become a cornerstone of the mid-Michigan music scene. This annual series is distinguished by its historically informed performances that bring unique and curated concert experiences to the community.
Les Délices, featuring baroque oboe, violin, cello, and harpsichord, will take the stage for the first concert in the series on Tuesday, September 17th at 7:30 p.m. in Fairchild Theatre of the MSU Auditorium. The concert, titled “Sounds of Sancho’s London,” will transport the audience back to 18th-century London, celebrating the musical achievements and legacy of British literary figure, composer, and abolitionist Charles Ignatius Sancho.
Les Délices captivates audiences with performances that explore unique and historically significant repertoires. They will present works by Sancho, whose music provides a powerful glimpse into the cultural landscape of his time. Their performance will highlight the expressive depth of Sancho’s compositions, bringing to life the spirit of 18th-century London, alongside works by his contemporaries Francesco Geminiani and George Frideric Handel.
The entire series is generously sponsored by the Taylor Johnston Early Music Series Endowment established by Taylor Johnston. Dr. Johnston had been an MSU professor for 51 years and passed away in 2019. His long-time passion for music, particularly early music, led him to establish the annual series.
Reserved seating tickets for this and other performances in the series are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors (age 60 and older), and $7 for students with ID and anyone under 18, and can be purchased online (music.msu.edu), by calling (517) 353-5340, or at the door.
