ABD (All But Dissertation) vs. Post-Comps
The terms “post-comp” and “all but dissertation (ABD)” are often used by doctoral students as they near the
completion of their degree. These terms are similar but not synonymous.
• A student is considered to be “Post-Comp” by the University when they have successfully completed all
comprehensive exams and are actively engaged in preparation for their dissertation, scholarly document, lecture recital(s), or doctoral composition (DD status). Full-time status for these students is defined as a minimum of 1 credit. (Note that this could include a student who has not finished an elective or has not completed all 4 recitals).
• A student is considered “ABD” (which is not an official University designation but is often used in connection with job applications) when they have successfully completed all degree requirements (required and elective coursework, comprehensive exams, recitals, etc.) EXCEPT the dissertation, scholarly document, lecture recital(s), or doctoral composition associated with MUS 999, 998, 997, or 996.
