A wide variety of performance opportunities await our students each year, with orchestras, bands, choirs and opera, jazz nonets and combos, small ensembles, and more.
A variety of programs and initiatives operate continuously or annually to enhance learning experiences and help students prepare for their future in music.
The MSU College of Music supports and challenges students, values innovation and creativity, and helps every community member achieve professional excellence.
In order to apply for funding from the College of Music Faculty Travel Fund, faculty members must fill out a simple online application form. Applications must be submitted electronically by the deadline specified for the funding period. Please do not email your application. Instead, please fill out the online form and attach your supporting documents. The link for the online form will be distributed by Shawn Mahorney when the application is open.
Incomplete applications will not be considered. Attach to your online form the following supporting documents (the only accepted file types are .pdf, .doc and/or .docx):
1. A narrative of your project, not to exceed two (2) pages, which should include:
2. A detailed breakdown of your expected expenses/budget. Proposals lacking a budget will not be funded. Include:
3. Evidence of conference acceptance/performance invitation (copy of email/letter from institution/venue destination).
4. Any other relevant documents you wish to include.
The Faculty Travel Peer Review Committee will, on the basis of the information provided by applicants for funding, review the applications and make recommendations to the Dean. The travel fund is designed to supplement faculty travel related to scholarly and creative projects. Ordinarily, funding will be limited to $1,000 for national travel, $1,500 for travel to Canada and Mexico, and $2,000 for international travel. Actual amount depends on budget, demand, and project merit. Statistics show that, typically for each round of application, the requests outnumber the budget by at least double. While each faculty member may expect up to a combined total of $2,000 dollars within a year, more funds may be available depending on demand and budget; funding is never guaranteed. Faculty members are greatly encouraged to also seek other funding sources to maximize the possibilities of their projects being funded. For example, MSU Special Foreign Travel Fund serves as a supplement to departmental, college funding for faculty international travel. To find out more, go to the MSU International Studies and Programs Special Foreign Travel Fund page.
There are generally three rounds of faculty travel applications during the year (with an added round, if there is any leftover budget):
