MUS 485.001 – Form in Tonal Instrumental Music
MW 8-8:50am (Sly)
MUS 485.002 – Post-Tonal Skills and Analysis
MW 11:30am-12:20pm (Sullivan)
In this course, we will explore several 20th-/21st-century compositional and analytical techniques by way of performance-based aural skills. Singing, rhythm work, and performance at the piano and the major instrument will serve as primary modes of engaging with a wide array of topics involving pitch, rhythm and temporality, form and process, intertextuality, and various extended techniques. Assignments and projects will involve practical, hands-on application through performance and model composition (think writing and performing a short etude or vocalise using a particular technique).
Students in this course should be prepared to bring their major instruments to class regularly or to arrange for an equivalent alternative at the beginning of the semester.
