Steps to establish a scholarship

1. Schedule a meeting with the development staff to discuss the possibility of creating a scholarship or fellowship that is meaningful to you.
2. When considering ways to fund a scholarship or fellowship, it is important to explore cash, appreciated securities, bequest options, expendable (current), and endowment (permanent, invested) options. This can be a smart strategy for creating immediate impact and perpetual sustainability. Remember that MSU requires a minimum of $50,000 over five years to establish an endowment.
3. Once you have decided on the type of fund you want to create, collaborate with the development team to formulate your donor agreement. This should include your personal statement and the criteria for the scholarship or fellowship.
4. Our development team will assist in obtaining approval and signatures for your scholarship agreement from internal and external stakeholders, which typically takes two weeks. After finalization, a designated account will be created to collect donations, and an allocation code will be generated.
5. Once the scholarship has been funded, the Admissions Office at the College of Music will collaborate with faculty to grant the scholarship annually, usually in April (or August/September for ensembles).
6. As a donor, you can expect a heartfelt thank you letter from the students in the fall and a comprehensive stewardship report in December from the Dean of the College of Music outlining expenses and investment updates.
