Euphonium
An accompanist is neither required nor provided. You may bring an accompanist at your own discretion.
Undergraduate and Music Minor
- Demonstrate to the best of your ability your command of tone quality, range, intonation, articulation, and rhythm.
- Major scales, melodic minor scales, and chromatic scales covering two octaves whenever possible.
- One or two solo works or movements featuring varied musical styles (at a difficulty level equal to or more challenging than the “Morceau Symphonique” by Guilmant.
- One or two contrasting etudes that demonstrate lyrical and marcato styles of performance (using study books by Fink, Arban, Rochut, Voxman, and/or Tyrell).
- Reading knowledge of both treble clef and bass clef is desired.
- Expect to do a short sight-reading passage and a short aural response exercise.
Master of Music
- Demonstrate to the best of your ability your command of tone quality, range, intonation, articulation, and rhythm.
- Major scales, melodic minor scales, and chromatic scales covering two octaves or greater.
- Candidates should have strong reading ability in treble, tenor, and bass clef.
- Two contrasting solo works or movements totaling at least ten minutes that showcase your musical and technical abilities.
- Three orchestral or band excerpts for euphonium of your choosing.
- Sight-reading may be included in this audition.
Doctor of Musical Arts
- Prepare a minimum of thirty minutes of solo repertoire that includes three or four varied musical styles and periods.
- Prepare a ten-minute lecture on the music performed.
- ONE of the works presented must be chosen from the following list:
- Martin Ellerbym, Concerto
- Jan Bach, Concert Variations
- David Gilllingham, Blue Lake Fantasies
- Philip Sparke, Pantomime
- Three orchestral or band excerpts for euphonium of your choosing.
- Candidates for this degree program are expected to demonstrate a high level of musicianship, along with excellent technical skills, strong sight reading ability, and mastery of bass, treble, and tenor clef.
