About the Keyboard Area

Keyboard Area students can pursue degrees in composition, music education and performance. Students may also double major in an unrelated field of study while working toward a music degree. A music minor is also available, and an honors program option is available for students in the MSU Honors College.

Individualized instruction is at the heart of the Keyboard Area, complemented by masterclasses and keyboard literature courses. All students participate in the Piano Performance class. All performances in this class are coached and critiqued by the entire piano faculty. An accompanying class, taught by the Director of Collaborative Piano, is required for all undergraduates. This class focuses on working as a collaborative artist with both instrumentalists and vocalists. All students gain performance experience in both solo and chamber music through recitals, studio classes, and off- and on-campus performances.

The Keyboard Area offers a Master’s degree in piano pedagogy as well as undergraduate piano pedagogy courses that offer opportunities to teach and observe children’s classes in the College of Music’s Community Music Schools in East Lansing and Detroit.

The Keyboard Area at MSU is led by distinguished faculty whose high level of performance, teaching, and professional reputation creates an exceptional learning environment for students to define their path and reach their potential.
