The College of Music’s popular Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series closes out its 16th season with Whirlwinds,a dynamic chamber concert highlighting the expressive power of wind instruments. The event takes place Monday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the MSU Auditorium’s Fairchild Theatre.

This thoughtfully curated program showcases the versatility and charm of wind instruments, featuring compositions spanning multiple eras. Audiences will experience the rich colors and textures of bassoon, clarinet, flute, oboe, saxophone, and more in an engaging lineup of chamber works.

The evening opens with Suite pour trio d’anches, Op. 47 by Alexandre Tansman, followed by Kevin Day’s Riversong, a contemporary piece blending atmospheric melody with rhythmic energy. The program continues with Sonatine Sportive, Op. 63 by Alexander Tcherepnin, Rossini’s Wind Quartet in D Major, and concludes with Poulenc’s Sextet for Piano and Winds, FP 100, a vibrant and playful fusion of piano and woodwinds.

“This concert is an exciting opportunity to experience the full range of wind instruments, from the classical elegance of Rossini to the bold innovation of contemporary composers,” said Michael Kroth, program curator and MSU Professor of Bassoon. “Each piece highlights the unique voice of wind instruments, and our musicians bring these compositions to life with dynamic energy and insight.”

Featured artist-faculty from the MSU College of Music performing in the concert include Michael Kroth, bassoon; Joseph Lulloff, saxophone; Nermis Mieses, oboe; Deborah Moriarty, piano; Richard Sherman, flute; Corbin Wagner, horn; Mingzhe Wang, clarinet; and Guy Yehuda, clarinet.

Whirlwinds is generously sponsored by April Clobes and Glen Brough. The entire West Circle Series is underwritten by Joanne and Bill Church.
