A wide variety of performance opportunities await our students each year, with orchestras, bands, choirs and opera, jazz nonets and combos, small ensembles, and more.
A variety of programs and initiatives operate continuously or annually to enhance learning experiences and help students prepare for their future in music.
The MSU College of Music supports and challenges students, values innovation and creativity, and helps every community member achieve professional excellence.
We turn passion for music into careers with purpose. We devote resources and staff to turn assumptions around that music – unlike STEM disciplines – is more passion than profession.
True, musicians are often very passionate about their craft, but for us, music is more than a passion. It is a profession like any other discipline, and the career preparation experts in our Running Start program make sure students know this from the very start.
Our vibrant, multi-disciplinary program listens to students interests and guides them through their options to pursue their passion while building an exciting and rewarding career. We are encouraging but realistic, nurturing but challenging. We offer programs and resources for all music students while cultivating the potential of each individual to find their path.
Of course, we offer the usual career prep activities, like resume refinement and interview skills development, but our career advisors are resourceful, constantly curating events and workshops, courses, entrepreneurial opportunities, performance opportunities, and more. They provide individual career coaching that helps students creatively channel their passions into productive careers.
Professional development opportunities in music come in different shapes and sizes, and in our community, it is common for students to brainstorm together, help each other with projects, support each other by sharing resources and leads, and celebrate and encourage each other along their paths.
Our academic and career advising teams work closely together so that each student gets the support they need to find their path while making sure it works within their academic requirements. Together, within our supportive community, students can initiate professional development conversations on day one and being building business and marketing skills, creating self-promotional materials, developing and realizing special projects, and leaning into entrepreneurial opportunities.
