The Michigan State University College of Music is proud to introduce the Ralph Votapek International Young Artist Piano Competition, a transformative event for young pianists set to debut August 14-17, 2025.
Named in honor of internationally acclaimed artist and MSU piano faculty emeritus Ralph Votapek, this competition celebrates excellence in piano performance while providing a unique opportunity for aspiring musicians to showcase their talent, learn from distinguished artist-faculty, and immerse themselves in a lively music community.
Designed for pianists aged 14-18, this global competition invites emerging artists to compete for over $10,000 in prizes, scholarship opportunities to MSU, and recognition on an international stage. A distinguished jury comprising MSU piano faculty will oversee all rounds of the competition.

We look forward to welcoming these talented musicians to our campus and witnessing their inspiring performances.”
Competition Highlights
Following a rigorous preliminary video screening, ten semifinalists will be invited to MSU’s campus to participate in the semifinal and final rounds, held in the Music Building’s acoustically beautiful Cook Recital Hall. Competitors will also benefit from masterclasses with MSU piano faculty, hands-on experience with state-of-the-art facilities in the Billman Music Pavilion, and opportunities to explore the university’s comprehensive music programs.

Ralph Votapek, the competition’s namesake, holds a storied legacy in the world of piano performance and pedagogy. The inaugural winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1962, Votapek is renowned for his dynamic artistry and deep commitment to musicianship. His decades-long association with MSU has left an indelible mark on generations of pianists and the broader classical music community.

Eligibility and Application Details
The competition is open to pianists of all nationalities who are between the ages of 14 and 18 as of August 17, 2025, and not yet enrolled in a college music program. Applications must include:
Applicants must also submit a $150 application fee by April 15, 2025. Semi-finalists will be announced by May 15, 2025, and receive invitations to participate in the live rounds at MSU.
