Exploring creativity through sound and technology.
The Electronic Music Workshop is an ensemble-based course that investigates the performance, creation, and study of experimental and improvised electronic and electroacoustic music. Open to undergraduate and graduate students from any area of study, this course provides an opportunity to approach music in new ways and consider its role within today’s evolving digital culture.
What the Course Covers
Students engage with a variety of approaches, including improvisation, text scores, works for electronic music ensemble, and compositions for unconventional or homemade instruments. The course also emphasizes open instrumentation and features original works created by members of the ensemble. Along the way, students have the chance to collaborate across disciplines at MSU and perform for audiences both on and beyond campus.
Approaches and Instruments
The ensemble is flexible and inclusive. Students may perform using laptops, electronic instruments, acoustic instruments, or any combination depending on the work being studied. Prior experience with electronic music or improvisation is not required, making the course accessible for those interested in exploring sound and performance from multiple perspectives.
Why It Matters
Electronic Music Workshop offers students a space to develop both creative and technical skills while broadening their musicianship. The course allows students to explore how music connects with technology, experiment with different modes of expression, and consider the possibilities of electronic sound in contemporary artistic practice.
