How to Apply
We want to learn as much we can about every applicant. Our application deadline is December 1st.
Application details for Master’s of Music in Music Theory
- Complete the online College of Music Supplemental Application and pay a $60 application fee.
- Personal Statement: 500-700 words explaining interest in music theory, career goals, teaching and research experience.
- Writing Sample: Submit 2-3 scholarly essays demonstrating analytical skills and clear writing.
- Curriculum Vitae: Include educational background, music theory coursework, research, teaching/tutoring experience, and other relevant professional information.
- Letters of Recommendation: Three letters assessing your music theory abilities, scholarly potential, and teaching experience. Please note, use only the College of Music application to submit letters online.
- Musicianship Skills (Written): Complete specified activities and submit a PDF of your realizations.
- Musicianship Skills (Practical): Video or audio recording demonstrating piano skills.
- Optional Portfolio: Additional work examples in music theory (e.g., compositions, counterpoint exercises).
- Interview: Selected candidates will be invited for an interview in early February. (Please contact Dr. Cara Stroud, area chairperson of music theory (cstroud@msu.edu), for further details)
- Transcripts: Submit one official transcript from every college or university attended. (Transcripts are considered official when mailed by the institution directly to the College of Music. E-transcripts are accepted only from U.S. schools sent directly by the institution.)
- Review additional requirements for International Students as outlined under admissions.
